The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized President Bola Tinubu, holding him responsible for the rising insecurity in Nigeria and the designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern by former US President Donald Trump.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, on Monday, the ADC emphasized that Trump's action highlights the urgent and extensive nature of Nigeria’s security crisis.
The party stated that the US President’s designation emphasizes the global expectation that governments must ensure the safety of their citizens.
“We are acutely aware of the painful truth that at stake in this matter are the countless human lives lost to insecurity in Nigeria, regardless of their ethnicity, faith, or region,”
“President Trump’s statement serves as a reminder of the broader international concern regarding the sanctity of human life and the fundamental obligation of national governments to protect the lives of those within their borders.”
“The characterization of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not represent our national reality, nor does it consider the ongoing and genuine efforts of the government to uphold freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians,” he remarked.
In addition to the security issues, the ADC lamented Nigeria’s diminished international standing, attributing it to what they termed the administration’s diplomatic negligence.
The party questioned the prolonged absence of ambassadors in key countries, more than two years into the government’s term, asking, “How can a government that has been claiming unprecedented revenue success continue to use lack of funds as an excuse for not appointing ambassadors?”
“Under President Tinubu, Nigeria has experienced a decline in its status as both a continental and regional leader.”
