Volodymyr Zelensky had warned that the Kremlin was plotting a “massive” attack just hours earlier, after it had suffered several humiliating blows at the hands of Ukraine in recent weeks.

He said: “The enemy is once again deliberately targeting residential areas and killing civilians.”

As the dust settled, the impact of the strikes across Kyiv was laid bare.

Debris littered the streets where devastated buildings and civilian infrastructure were left smouldering.

Many parts of the city were on fire and emergency crews were out in their droves battling the flames.

In the midst of the onslaught, tracer fire from air defence systems were seen lighting up the sky as the roar of missile and drone explosions were heard.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that at least ten people had lost their lives, with the death toll expected to rise.

Ukraine’s US ambassador Olha Stefanishyna wrote on X: “Another horrific night for the residents of the city, who were forced to spend it in shelters.”

“Fires and the destruction of civilian infrastructure and residential buildings in several districts of the city.”

Russia said the strikes were retaliation for Ukraine’s repeated assaults on its energy grid.
