Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has revealed the reasons behind his inability to make decisive actions to resolve the issues plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Atiku explained that he could not implement firm decisions to address the PDP's challenges because he does not hold the positions of National Chairman or National Secretary.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, the former Vice President stated that the National Chairman and Secretary of the PDP do not heed his advice, which has left him unable to rectify the situation within the party.
The crisis within the PDP began in 2022 as the party prepared for the 2023 presidential election.
The former ruling party had designated its presidential ticket for the North, coinciding with having its National Chairman from the same region.
This situation resulted in Atiku emerging as the PDP's presidential candidate for the 2023 election.
Initially, the party had allocated its presidential ticket to the North, and Atiku's emergence displeased several party leaders.
The ongoing turmoil ultimately prompted Atiku and other party members to join the opposition coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Nevertheless, Atiku has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of orchestrating efforts to undermine the PDP.
“I could have made some decisive moves to rectify the party if I were the chairman or secretary, or if someone who listens to me held one of those positions,” he stated.
“Unfortunately, those in these roles have personal interests that differ significantly from the party's goals,” he added.
