A group from the southeastern region of Nigeria, operating under the Igbo National Union Worldwide (INU-W), has called for a fair trial regarding the terrorism charges brought against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, by the Federal Government.
The group urged the Nigerian Government to set aside personal sentiments and dismiss what they described as fabricated evidence against Kanu, advocating for fairness in the terrorism charges against the beleaguered IPOB leader.
INU-W made this appeal through its Administrative Secretary, Mazi Austin-Mary Ndukwu, in a press statement he recently signed and shared with the media, condemning the unnecessary delays in the case.
“It was disheartening on September 26, 2025, when the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Omotosho, dismissed the ‘no case submission’ made by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's legal team, shocking those with a sense of justice worldwide.
By rejecting the no case submission, the Nigerian Government and its security agencies have demonstrated their bias and intentions regarding the trial of MNK, who was unlawfully extradited from Kenya in June 2021,” he stated.
The INU-W Secretary noted that it is perplexing that while MNK is being prosecuted and persecuted, Sunday Igboho, who also faces terrorism charges, remains free, and the notorious bandit and terrorist, Bello Turji, causing significant destruction in northern Nigeria, has yet to be captured.
The group asserted in the press statement that Mazi Kanu's case appears to have an ethnic bias, despite numerous calls and recommendations for his unconditional release from the DSS facility.
“The Federal Government should reconsider its stance and take appropriate action before this legal farce escalates into a situation that could further destabilize the already fragile unity of the country.
Igbo National Union Worldwide once again demands a fair and just trial for Kanu, now that the Nigerian Government has decided he has a case to answer,” the statement continued.
However, the group urged individuals with a sense of justice, particularly members of IPOB and the Igbo community, to exercise restraint and not allow anyone, group, or organization to coerce them into participating in protests, demonstrations, or rallies against the prolonged legal proceedings.
“Such actions would be counterproductive and could jeopardize the efforts of MNK’s legal team led by Kanu Agabi, SAN. It could also serve as another pretext for security agencies to target Igbo youths. This moment calls for deep reflection by the Igbo on our identity, existence, and survival in Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
