&#8220;Looks like we are not going to see a dry pattern set up for prolonged periods without precipitation in central Saskatchewan and in the Saskatoon area,&#8221; meteorologist Peter Quinlan said.
According to the Environment Canada website, so far this summer the Saskatoon area has seen below-average rainfall in summer, 41.7 mm of rain in June and 17.7 mm of moisture in July. The hottest temperature thus far was on July 2 when Saskatoon hit 40 C.
The majority of rain has been from scattered thunderstorms — the main source of moisture for many areas across the province this summer.
<a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/tag/enviornment-canada" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Environment Canada</a> has issued another heat warning for the Saskatoon area for the next couple of days.
Environment Canada added there is a chance of rain in the extended forecast.
&nbsp;

Dry, hot conditions are expected to persist through the heart of summer through August.

The sunflowers have become a hit on Instagram, ever since Max first began planting them six years ago.
&#8220;I can&#8217;t attribute it to anything specific,&#8221; says Max. &#8220;I&#8217;m sure COVID has contributed because there&#8217;s a limit to what people can do, but it&#8217;s been growing every year since six, seven years ago.&#8221;
The farmers say the flowers weren&#8217;t meant to be a tourist attraction, the bright, blooming fields actually play an important role in crop rotation.
&#8220;I never plant a field with the same crop two years in a row,&#8221; says Max. &#8220;So number one I&#8217;m always rotating, and that&#8217;s a part of the fit for the sunflowers in our rotation. It&#8217;s a different plant, so it helps the soil differently than other plants.&#8221;

Now, the flowers also help to put smiles on faces, with bright, cheerful pictures on countless social media posts.
If you&#8217;ve missed the sunflower season this year, don&#8217;t worry, Holly says they&#8217;ll be back.
&#8220;Every year we plan to continue to plant sunflowers and keep them at the roadside for people&#8217;s personal use and enjoyment.&#8221;

A farm in Napanee, Ont., decided to plant sunflowers along the roadside more than six years ago and it has been a local attraction for selfies and photo ops ever since.

Haligonians looking to beat the heat this summer should be aware that two local pools will be closed for the rest of the season.
In an <a href="https://www.halifax.ca/home/news/parks-recreation-aquatics-update" target="_blank">aquatics update</a> posted to its municipal website, the city said the Halifax Common Pool remains closed for the rest of the summer &#8220;due to ongoing repair work.&#8221;
As well, work on Centennial Pool is ongoing and that pool is expected to reopen in September.
The city said free swims will be available at Needham Pool at the following times:

<li class="xxx">Monday through Friday from July 26 until Sept. 3: 2–3 p.m.; 3-4 p.m.; and 5-6 p.m.</li>
<li class="xxx">Sunday: 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and 2-3 p.m.</li>
</ul>
Residents must register in advance over the phone at 902-490-4633 or <a href="https://www.halifax.ca/home/news/halifax.ca/myREC" target="_blank">online</a>.
As well, free swims will be available at the YMCA at 5640 Sackville St. at the following times:

2 Halifax-area pools out of commission for the summer

In downtown Montreal, it&#8217;s festival season.
In the city&#8217;s entertainment district, a musical act was conducting a sound check on stage Friday evening &#8212; the second day of the French-language version of the renowned Just For Laughs comedy festival. Tickets for many of the festival&#8217;s free outdoor shows &#8212; limited by COVID-19 regulations &#8212; were sold out.
Two blocks away, more than 100 people were watching an acoustic performance by the Isaac Neto Trio &#8212; part of the last weekend of the Festival International Nuits d&#8217;Afrique, a celebration of music from the African continent and the African diaspora.
With COVID-19 restrictions continuing to limit capacity, festival organizers say they&#8217;re glad to be back but looking forward to next year when they hope border restrictions and capacity limits won&#8217;t affect their plans.
Charles Décarie, Just For Laughs&#8217; CEO and president, said this is a &#8220;transition year.&#8221;
&#8220;Even though we have major constraints from the public health group in Montreal, we&#8217;ve managed to design a festival that can navigate through those constraints,&#8221; Décarie said.
The French-language Juste pour rire festival began on July 15 and is followed by the English-language festival until July 31.
When planning began in February and March, Décarie said, organizers came up with a variety of scenarios for different crowd sizes, ranging from no spectators to 50 per cent of usual capacity.
&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to build scenarios,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You do have to plan a little bit more than usual because you have to have alternatives.&#8221;

As in the past, the festivals include both ticketed indoor shows and free outdoor performances. Outside, there will be fewer stages and smaller crowds than in years past, Décarie said. Indoor performances will run at 30 per cent capacity, while outdoor shows will have around 10 to 20 per cent of their pre-pandemic capacity.
&#8220;Normally, we get about one million people during the festivals over 15 days, and this year, we would be happy to have 200,000 people visiting us over the next couple weeks,&#8221; Décarie said.
Quebec&#8217;s COVID-19 restrictions limit outdoor events to a maximum capacity of 5,000 people, who must be divided into separate sections of 500 people. Indoor events are capped at 3,500 spectators, who must sit in sections of 250 people, with separate entrances and washrooms for each section.
Due to the border restrictions, which Décarie describes as a &#8220;massive concern,&#8221; some performances are being filmed in New York and Los Angeles and will be streamed online.
&#8220;That&#8217;s how we&#8217;ve been able to reach out to international talent,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve decided to change the way we proceed, and we went to them.&#8221;
In-person shows will have a focus on local talent, he said.
Other Montreal festivals also say they plan to work around the border restrictions by focusing on local talent.
The Festival International Nuits d&#8217;Afrique is featuring local artists and drawing on recorded performances from previous years, Suzanne Rousseau, the festival&#8217;s managing director and co-founder, said in an interview Friday.
&#8220;The first nights, especially, were amazing,&#8221; she said of the festival, which started July 6 and runs until July 18. &#8220;The artists were saying it&#8217;s my first show in front of a live audience in a year and a half.&#8221;
The festival&#8217;s outdoor component consists of two smaller &#8220;cabaret&#8221; stages, Rousseau said. Instead of a main stage, there is a sound and light show projected on a building, including video performances from the festival&#8217;s 35-year history.
&#8220;What&#8217;s important is that festivalgoers are able to come and see live shows &#8212; that was big, big, big,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And to have some online shows for the people who can&#8217;t make it to Montreal or can&#8217;t travel.&#8221;
Rousseau said she hopes to keep some of the online components in future years, but she&#8217;s also looking forward to having a bigger festival next year.
&#8220;We&#8217;re really happy to have done a festival this year, it prepares us for next year,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It gives us the ambition to be ready to receive more people, more acts and a complete experience.&#8221;
Some of Montreal&#8217;s large summer festivals, including Montreal&#8217;s jazz festival, Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, have been pushed back to September. Rousseau, however, said she never considered delaying this year&#8217;s edition of Nuits d&#8217;Afrique.
&#8220;It&#8217;s really important to be there in the summer; there was no doubt we were going to do it,&#8221; she said.
Francis Bouchard, a spokesman for Tourisme Montréal, a non-profit that promotes the city&#8217;s tourism sector, said that with rescheduled events, the city&#8217;s summer festival season will last until October this year. It&#8217;s encouraging, he said, to see festivals and events that were postponed or cancelled last year scheduled to return this summer and fall.
&#8220;It&#8217;s a relief that it&#8217;s coming back,&#8221; Bouchard said. While border restrictions limit visitors, tourism advertising campaigns are now targeting Canadians, he added.
Décarie said he&#8217;s optimistic about the future of festivals in Montreal, adding that people &#8220;have an appetite to be out there, to celebrate summer in the city.&#8221;

‘We’re back’: Montreal festival promoters happy to return but looking to next year

The Middlesex-London Health Unit has issued a two-day <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/tag/heat-wave" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">heat alert</a>.
Sunday is calling for a high of 31 C and Monday is expecting a high of 33 C, meeting the health unit&#8217;s threshold for issuing an alert.
The heat alert will remain in effect until Tuesday when a mix of sun and cloud will bring the temperature down.
“If you are planning to spend time outside in these temperatures it is important to plan ahead and take the necessary precautions,&#8221; said Randy Walker, a public health inspector with the health unit.

An early start to the strawberry season has been a welcome change for Kingston farmers.
&#8220;It&#8217;s been a great season. It started really early for us, earlier than ever before,&#8221; says Christine Paul, co-owner of Fruition Berry Farm.

&#8220;We had a lot of 30-degree days sort of at the end of May and early June, so rather than having about 10 days&#8217; warning from the time our berries start to turn red to the time we open, we had more like five days because the heat really brought them on quickly.&#8221;
The warm weather that Ontario experienced throughout May and the beginning of June allowed for what Paul calls &#8220;excellent berry weather.&#8221;
&#8220;Weather is the boss, I always say. You know, the heat really ripens berries and on a very hot day, berries can go from under-ripe to overripe,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Luckily, because we had such early warm weather and then it cooled down a bit, we&#8217;ve had excellent berry weather this year so we couldn&#8217;t be more pleased.&#8221;
According to Paul, a strawberry-picking season usually lasts between 21 and 28 days once it begins. Monday marks day 20 for her crop.
&#8220;So, we&#8217;ve been on picking for a few weeks now and we&#8217;re certainly on our last week now, but they&#8217;re still lovely berries.&#8221;

With the season coming to a close, Kingstonians are taking this opportunity to pick strawberries while they last.
&#8220;I&#8217;ve been here before and every time we go strawberry picking it&#8217;s so much better than just buying it at the grocery store,&#8221; says Fruition Berry Farm frequenter Carys Casucci. &#8220;And it&#8217;s the perfect time for strawberry picking so we thought it&#8217;d be just a great little fun thing to do with the family.&#8221;
If you&#8217;re hoping to pick your own basket, this week will be your last chance to do so. Paul reminds potential pickers to check their website or call before coming to ensure there are berries left.

If you’re hoping to take a summer vacation in Saskatchewan this year, you may be out of luck.
According to a government spokesperson and <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/tag/tourism" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">hospitality</a> industry representative, many <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/camping" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">camping</a> sites and <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/tag/tourism" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">tourist</a> destinations are either fully booked or close to being fully booked.
“For July already we are trending about 80 per cent occupancy (for camping sites),” said Robin Campese, the director of the provincial government’s visitor experiences.

She added the first couple weeks of August are more than 70 per cent booked.
Jim Bence, the CEO of Hospitality Saskatchewan, a group representing many hotel owners, said they’re getting interest like they&#8217;ve &#8220;never seen before&#8221; from people in Saskatchewan wanting to see other Saskatchewan attractions.
They both told Global News it&#8217;s a symptom of pent-up demand since public health restrictions kept many people home since last summer.
Campese said the government’s booking website saw nearly twice as many requests for campsites as soon as the booking window opened in April.
“It&#8217;s generally around 20,000. And we saw over 40,000 reservations during the launch period,” she said.

Two hotel managers told Global News they are happy to see the return of guests and said the number of phone calls they’ve received jumped after Premier Scott Moe announced the government would lift all COVID-19 restrictions on July 11.
“That really opened the floodgates when it came to the bookings for the summer,” said David Wood, the general manager of the Temple Gardens Hotel and Spa, in Moose Jaw.
“Right now, the phones are ringing&#8230; every day, (calling) for August and July.”
He predicted the hotel’s rooms and spa will be fully booked in the next couple of weeks.
He said the staff is pushing to prepare for July 11.
“I&#8217;m not going to kid you. It&#8217;s almost like reopening a hotel,” he said, speaking over Zoom from Moose Jaw.

He said a lot of things will change on July 11, though he added the hotel will have some health guidelines in place, like asking guests to consider wearing a mask.
He said he had hired more than half of the staff back already and thinks it’s possible he will be hiring more in a matter of weeks.
Ryan Danberg, the managing partner of Elk Ridges Resort near Prince Albert National Park, said his motto for reopening is “adapt and change.”
“Every week something was changing and you have to adapt to adapt as an organization,” he told Global News.
Everyone interviewed said the vast majority of their guests were from the province.
“Staycations are a new trend,” Danberg said.
“And my advice to (people wanting to take one) would be, get a plan in place and get a booking.”
Though it looks like people golfing or perhaps relaxing by a pool will soon surround them, Wood and Danberg both said they won’t get to relax until 2022.
“Irrespective of which part of the sector you&#8217;re involved in, recovery is going to take time,” Bence said.

An industry spokesperson says most tourist destinations in Saskatchewan are almost completely booked for the summer, with the government lifting COVID-19 restrictions in July.

Pent-up demand leaves Sask. tourist destinations nearly fully booked

People looking forward to summer fun at Nova Scotia&#8217;s beaches can do so under the supervision of lifeguards starting July 1.
According to the province, the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service provides 82 lifeguards to supervise 25 beaches in 12 counties.
Last summer, more than 300,000 people visited the beaches and more than 100 rescues took place.

Beaches will be supervised daily between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., except for Mavillette and Clam Harbour beaches, which are only supervised on weekends until Aug. 29.

Some June rain offered relief for farmers in Manitoba, but the province is still well behind its usual rainfall amounts.
&#8220;We&#8217;re still in drought conditions, there&#8217;s absolutely no doubt about that,&#8221; said Manitoba&#8217;s Minister of Agriculture and Resource Development, Blaine Pedersen. &#8220;Rain has helped but it&#8217;s a bit spotty.&#8221;
The most recent outlook from the <a href="https://maps.canada.ca/journal/content-en.html?lang=en&amp;appid=94636b60096b4988b65423ccd0d7247e&amp;appidalt=18b7e1ec1e934f0c94fbb63bf1bfb802" target="_blank">Canadian Drought Monitor</a> shows all of southern Manitoba is experiencing some type of drought conditions with extreme drought in areas between Winnipeg and the Saskatchewan border.

Rainfall amounts recorded by the province show a mixed bag of precipitation in the month of June. Some weather stations reported around 90 millimetres of rain while others show less than 30 mm.
Pedersen says it&#8217;s not shaping up to be a big harvest year because of the effects of dry weather and above-average temperatures. And it&#8217;s impacting more than just the crops.
&#8220;The real concern is in the livestock side, the low water, the pasture conditions, there&#8217;s very slow, little growth in the pastures,&#8221; he said.
On top of the effects a lack of rain has for cattle, come winter, Pedersen says there will likely be a hay shortage.
<h3>HOT SUMMER FORECASTED FOR MANITOBA</h3>
Environment Canada&#8217;s modeling is calling for a greater-than-usual number of days with temperatures above 30 C in July and August, as the first day of summer arrived Sunday.
&#8220;(Models) saying warm, warm, warm, we think every month will be warmer than normal,&#8221; said Environment Canada meteorologist David Phillips.
Manitoba experienced double the normal amount of spring days with above 30 C highs in 2021.
&#8220;June started off really warm with a temperature of 36 degrees on June 2, that&#8217;s sometimes warmer than you get all summer,&#8221; Phillips said.
But it&#8217;s too soon to say if any much-needed rain will come along with the warm weather in the summer, he said.
&#8220;The problem is the precipitation this time of year comes in heavy amounts or no amounts,&#8221; Phillips said. &#8220;It could be raining in your front yard and not in your backyard, so it&#8217;s hard to generalize.&#8221;

“We’re still in drought conditions, there’s absolutely no doubt about that,” said Blaine Pedersen. “Rain has helped but it’s a bit spotty.”

Fort Henry, a UNESCO world heritage site and major tourist draw for Kingston, opened its doors to visitors today.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve opened the doors to the citadel of Upper Canada and we are ready to go, so as always it&#8217;s exciting,&#8221; says Fort Henry program supervisor Mark Bennett.
With its commanding view of the city and the St. Lawrence River, Fort Henry is now operating ahead of the summer tourism season.
While public health safety measures mean performances by the Fort Henry Guard won&#8217;t take place on the same scale, Bennett says demonstrations are happening.

He continues that staff will explain &#8220;how the rifles work and we shoot them, how the cannons work, we fire them off, we talk about why back in the day the British Army had music so we can play some tunes and we also have a demonstration about the women of the garrison.&#8221;
As for tours, they will be self-guided for now.
&#8220;You&#8217;ll receive a booklet when you come in at the fort and it helps guide you around and, as I say, we have guards set up at various station points to go over what you&#8217;re about to see, what you have seen or any question in general.&#8221;

For visitors like Dave Warner, who&#8217;s been to Fort Henry on numerous occasions, it&#8217;s still worth the price of admission.
&#8220;They still have some demonstrations going on, some of the rooms are closed off but you can poke your head in and take a look, and yeah, I think despite the Covid precautions they&#8217;re doing a great job,&#8221; Warner says.
Not only is Fort Henry a historic site, it&#8217;s also a museum.
As the province moves through the three stages of its re-opening plan, Bennett hopes to open the museum portion of the site later in the season.
&#8220;Whenever the health unit and the government determine it is safe for us and of course the public, we&#8217;re here to respond,&#8221; says Bennett.
Fort Henry is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., seven days a week.
