DOZENS of locations are set to be hit by torrential rain and thunderstorms overnight after weeks of drought conditions.

Affected areas are likely to experience some travel disruptions and flash flooding as a result of the heavy downpours.

The has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms in parts of the UK, as several regions brace for inclement conditions.

Heavy downpours are forecast across some major cities tonight between 7pm and 10am tomorrow, offering the first significant in weeks for some locations.

The will hit regions across Northern England, Yorkshire & Humber, the East Midlands, East Scotland, Northern Ireland and North Wales.

Major cities such as Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland and York, alongside Greater Manchester, Merseyside and the entirety of Yorkshire will be affected.

Before 9pm tonight, are also in place for Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Angus in Scotland and for the whole of Northern Ireland until midnight.

Under a yellow weather warning for thunder, Brits are warned to expect difficult driving conditions, some flooding, damage to buildings, train delays, and some short-term loss of power.

This inclement weather comes just days after the end of Britain’s fifth of the year, with the hottest day of the year recorded at 38.1C in Kew Gardens last Thursday.

Currently, nearly-three quarters of England and all of Wales are in drought conditions as a result of the prolonged dry conditions, with 45million Brits set to be affected.

As water levels continue to dwindle, 10 water companies have introduced for at least 27million customers across England and Wales, with Wessex Water most recently introducing a restriction after 50 years.

Those who are at risk of flooding have been recommended to consider preparing a flood plan or creating an emergency flood kit.

Conditions are expected to ease by Friday and during the weekend, where sunshine and are forecast.
