FIGHTING back tears, Rory McIlroy warmly embraced his family after a nerve-wracking defence of his Masters title on Sunday.

And this time, watching him from the sidelines of the course were sie.

Their presence was all the more poignant as they missed last year’s sensational victory, which saw the Northern Irishman end an 11-year Major drought.

Also there to celebrate was his and his beloved five-year-old daughter Poppy.

Under the warm glow of the sun in Augusta, Georgia, it could be easy to forget how much of a rollercoaster the last few years have been for Rory.

The world was left stunned when, just under two years ago, .

It came amid , with the pair’s chemistry the talk of the golfing world.

But just one month later came the revelation that his marriage to Erica had been saved.

Now, Sunday’s victory has revealed how far the golfer and his loved ones have come since those dark days — and how Team Rory has supported the 36-year-old pro amid intense personal and professional pressure.

It is his close group of childhood friends, known as the “Mac Pac”, who have kept him grounded over the years.

Hailing from around Holywood Club in County Down, they include his caddie Harry Diamond and pals Ricky McCormick and Mitchell Tweedie.

It was hugs all round after Rory secured his second green jacket for his Masters win.

The beaming faces of his friends and family made it clear how much Rory’s victory meant to them — and how much they mean to Rory.

He has become the first golfer since in 2002 to win back-to-back.

He now joins an elite group of three others to successfully defend the title — , and Woods.

The significance of Rory being the first since Tiger will not be lost on those who have followed their sporting rivalry.

But, as a new biography of the Northern Irish star reveals, their relationship is more complex than it seems.

As a young man, Rory looked up to the American golfer and the pair are close professionally and personally.

“He has been an idol and a hero of mine over the years, and I feel pretty lucky that I’ve gotten to know him more intimately than some,” he said of Tiger in 2022, according to author Alan Shipnuck.

But Erica would be left frustrated by the US sports star who, struggling to sleep, would send her husband a flurry of messages in the early hours of the morning.

“He’d be texting me at four o’clock in the morning: ‘Up lifting. What are you doing?’,” Rory said in 2017 according to Alan Shipnuck, who wrote biography Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf’s Most Human Superstar.

“Erica got p***ed off with it. He was texting me in the middle of the night, and I was like, ‘Tiger is in the gym’.”

But keen as Rory was to match Tiger’s professional success, he also saw a warning in his friend, who has faced numerous controversies, including cheating and, most recently, a charge of driving under the influence after flipping his car.

Rory may also have feared his own personal life was unravelling, especially when the reached fever pitch.

But the love he has for his friends and family is the clearest sign of what matters most to the star, despite his colossal wealth.

His Masters victory banked him a cool £3.35million in prize money, but he isn’t the only one benefiting.

Caddies traditionally take ten per cent of the winnings, which means Harry could be walking away £335,000 better off, although the precise figure is unknown.

Rory’s lavish Florida mansion was reportedly worth £16million and included nine bedrooms and ten bathrooms. He has now settled in the UK, on Surrey’s prestigious Wentworth estate close to the famous Wentworth Golf Club.

But as the sporting hero reflected on his efforts at Sunday’s press conference, it was his parents who received the greatest tribute.

“I’ve waited so long to win the Masters and all of a sudden I win two in a row,” he said, emotion etched on his face.

“They missed it last year and the first thing I wanted to do was fly home to see them because I obviously wouldn’t be sitting up here if it wasn’t for them.

“I had to convince them to come this year because they thought the reason that I won last year was because they weren’t here.

“I’m glad we proved that wrong, so they can keep coming as long as they want.”

Welling up, he added: “Mum and Dad, I owe everything to you. You are the most wonderful parents.

“If I can be half the parent to Poppy as you were to me, then I know I’ve done a good job.

“It’s amazing to have them here. I’m excited to celebrate with them.”

Rory, after all, is well aware that his triumphs would not have happened were it not for the sacrifices his working-class parents made.

It was his dad Gerry, a keen golfer himself, who gave a two-year old Rory his first set of plastic clubs.

At home, the youngster would sleep clutching a club to improve his grip, and he would practice his technique by chipping balls into their washing machine. But hitting the heights was never going to come cheaply.

To fund his career, Gerry grafted 100 hours each week, cleaning toilets in the mornings before working the bar at their local golf club.

Rosie took on the graveyard shift at a packaging factory. “I had no idea what else to do,” his dad later said. “I’m a working-class man. We wanted to give our only child a chance.”

Rory fought tears again when asked about his support back home in .

“I was a little kid with a dream and the support that I had from my family and my friends and everyone back home . . . Some people probably thought that it was outlandish to dream of the things I wanted to do,” he admitted.

“But I had amazing support from back home and I can’t thank them all enough for that continued support.”

Such backing has seen Rory navigate ups and downs dating back to when he was a fresh-faced newbie.

He met his first girlfriend, Holly Sweeney, aged 16. They were on-off for years, until — just before his 2011 British Open victory — he ended things.

Before long, .

Their relationship progressed and, on New Year’s Eve 2013, he proposed with a £98,000 eight-carat diamond ring in Sydney, Australia.

However, in 2014, days after the wedding invitations were sent out, Rory stunned the guests by calling it off.

Caroline, who had reportedly already tried on her bridal gown, found out the news in a devastating three-minute phone call. “The problem is mine,” Rory later said.

“The wedding invitations made me realise that I wasn’t ready. I wish Caroline all the best.”

Rory then began seeing New Yorker Erica Stoll, who he met while she worked for the Professional Golfers’ Association.

First crossing paths in 2012, she once helped arrange a police escort for Rory after he overslept and nearly did not make it to the course in time. They tied the knot in 2017 at Ashford Castle in County Mayo.

Guests at the ceremony, which reportedly cost as much as £400,000, included pop stars , and , while legend Stevie Wonder performed.

And by his side once again were the Mac Pack — with childhood pal Harry Diamond stepping up as best man.

Harry became his caddie that same year, replacing JP Fitzgerald.

In 2024, as his marriage seemed to be on the brink of collapse, Rory knew that whatever happened, he would have Harry — and the rest of his friends — by his side.

When the legal papers were served, calling for a judge to enforce a prenuptial agreement signed before their marriage, Rory also asked to have shared custody of their daughter, Poppy.

But most of all, the move fuelled reports of something between Rory and CBS presenter Amanda, who had recently split with her husband.

There were claims the pair were flirty in interviews and the day before the divorce announcement, a friend of Amanda’s had commented “You two” under a picture of them on , along with a heart emoji.

Sources close to both have rubbished the claims. And indeed, behind the scenes, crisis talks between Rory and Erica would prove fruitful — with their divorce called off.

“Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together,” Rory later said. “Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

By the time of his historic Masters win last year, with Erica and Poppy by his side, it was clear things were truly back on track.

“To finally get this done, and to do it with Erica and Poppy here, it means the world,” Rory said through tears.

The family’s move across the pond, from Florida to the exclusive Wentworth estate in Surrey, has put Rory closer to his friends and family in County Down.

And once the celebrations from Sunday’s victory are over, he has his sights set on becoming the greatest European golfer of all time.

But as the scenes at Augusta showed, family comes first.

When asked what brings him the most joy away from golfing, he replied without hesitation: “Watching my daughter grow up. I think Poppy is like a mini Erica — it’s like living with two of them.”
