The Northern Progressive Agenda, NPA, has issued a stern call for unity, democratic strengthening, and strategic collaboration across Northern Nigeria, citing growing concerns over the state of the country’s democratic space.
In a press statement signed by the group’s National Secretary, Idris Ibrahim Kalgo, the NPA warned that perceived weakening of democratic institutions, shrinking political space, and erosion of credible opposition could threaten governance and the region’s long-term stability.
“The North has always played a defining role in shaping Nigeria’s political and moral direction. Today, that responsibility calls for renewed clarity of purpose and unity of action,” the statement said.
The group urged progressive leaders, irrespective of political affiliation, to rise above division and work collaboratively in the interest of the region.
It also called on aspirants and stakeholders within the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and across parties to embrace unity, discipline, and a shared vision capable of inspiring public confidence.
The statement further encouraged youth, women, and civil society actors to actively participate in the democratic process, ensuring their voices shape the future, while calling on public institutions to uphold the rule of law, fairness, and constitutional order.
Kalgo described the current moment as a “generational responsibility” while emphasising NPA’s commitment to convening thought leaders, policymakers, and emerging voices to develop practical solutions addressing insecurity, rebuilding public trust, and unlocking the region’s potential.
The NPA envisioned a Northern Nigeria that is united, secure, prosperous, and progressive, stressing that “the time to act is now.”
