Kimi Antonelli, 19, at the Shanghai Audi International Circuit as team-mate finished second.

But one of the other main stories was seeing start to threaten again.

The former Mercedes star has struggled for high finishes since joining ahead of the 2025 season.

But this campaign has started with promise with Hamilton already clocking up 4th and 3rd place finishes.

The podium in Shanghai was his first in 26 attempts since becoming a driver for the iconic Italian team.

He dedicated the achievement to his mother Carmen Larbalestier who was in the garage as well as his step-mum Linda.

He said: “It’s such a special day, one of the most amazing weeks I’ve had.

“I’ve travelled out here with my mum, travelled around and had some really special moments together.

“And for her to see the support that I get here in Shanghai, it’s phenomenal. I’m just so grateful for how they show up for me here.

“Happy Mother’s Day to my mum, and to my step-mum Linda who has been here with me many times and been a huge part of my life.

“And also to all the mums around the world.”

There was no disappointment for Hamilton about not finishing higher in the race.

He insisted that it was a proud moment to see the success of Antonelli and share the podium with him.

Hamilton, 41, was on the stage with the Italian as well as his former team-mate Russell and ex-race engineer Oeter Bonnington.

He added: “A huge congratulations to Kimi, it’s a great privilege to see him take my place and get to work with an amazing team.

“Congratulations to everyone at Mercedes who have done a phenomenal job.

“To be up there with Kimi, with Bono, it was really sweet.

“To fight back and get to third was a hell of a push.

“A massive thank you to Ferrari – it’s my first podium with them which is a huge moment for me.”
