AMERICAN supermarkets are odd places.

Seemingly everything contains cheese, and I popped into one the other day which had an entire aisle dedicated to ‘Functional Bread’.

As opposed to?

You see I can’t get food off my mind, as the written press and photographers are the only people at the Breeders’ Cup banned from entering the breakfast room at Keeneland.

On the plus side, it means I’ve been running around the track in the mornings on an empty stomach which has done wonders for the waistline.

It’s a shame I’ve put it all back on again in the evenings, but the steak and mac ‘n’ cheese combo has been a bit of a gamechanger.

And good for young jockey Jack Nicholls, who has been out in Kentucky since late last week and who isn’t letting a little thing like 8st 9lb on Turf Sprint contender Miss Yechance get in the way of a good time.

“I’m lucky, I’m naturally light and don’t struggle with my weight, so I’ve been able to have a burger and couple of milkshakes,” he grins.

His story is a brilliant one.

He is only 20-years-old and still hasn’t ridden out his claim at home, but Karl Burke’s sprinter provided him with the greatest day of his life earlier this month.

The owners kept the faith with Nicholls, grandson of the late ‘sprint king’ Dandy, in the Abbaye and she won impressively.

Getting a first Group 1 while you’re still an apprentice isn’t bad going.

But I think it’ll be on another level if the three-year-old filly wins in the Turf Sprint (5.48) on Saturday — for all she has a wide draw to deal with.

Nicholls said: “It’s been an amazing experience. It’s organised chaos on the track in the mornings.

“I’m still pinching myself about France and I’m so excited for Saturday. My family are all out here, it’s absolutely mega.

“Her draw isn’t ideal, but the American horses are rapid and we can just drop in, roll the dice and try and come and get them late.”
