Outrage as Henry Nowak's Killer Granted Video Chats with Jailbird Mom Who Concealed Murder Weapon

HENRY Nowak’s killer is to be allowed ­prison-to-prison video calls with his mother, sparking fury.

is in jail for hiding murderer ­Vickrum Digwa’s knife in Southampton.

A source said: “Henry’s family won’t get to see him again. It’s beyond a joke.”

Letting killer Vickrum Digwa have video calls with his jailbird mum has infuriated prison staff — and is another blow for victim Henry Nowak’s family, sources said last night.

Digwa, 23, had an application approved for online video chats — called “Purple Visits” — with Kiran Kaur, 53, despite her hiding the knife her son used to kill student Henry, 18.

The murderer, at , Durham, is set to have one of the calls within weeks to Kaur, in , Surrey.

A source said: “The fact Digwa will be allowed the video calls with his mum has angered people, including many of the staff at Frankland. They think it’s a ­disgrace that they have to go to the effort of arranging them.

“Poor Henry’s family won’t get to see him again so why should Digwa be allowed to speak to his mum via video-link? It is beyond a joke and we go too far to accommodate the needs of killers.”

in Southampton last December, while Kaur got three years for hiding his ­eight-inch blade at home.

After the fatal attack, that he had been the victim of a racist attack.

bodycam footage later showed officers arresting Henry as he repeatedly said he was stabbed, telling them: “I can’t breathe.”

The sickening circumstances ­surrounding has made the Purple Visit approval more appalling, our source said.

They went on: “Governors have to judge each application on its merits.

“But the idea of this happening is horrible given the nature of the crime — and the fact his mum got involved after the murder and hid the weapon. But now she has been convicted and sentenced there is no longer a danger of them discussing the crime and affecting her case.”

There was said to be little chance of the application getting turned down.

The source continued: “He’d be able to claim his human rights were breached and have all these lobby groups standing up for him.

“Digwa has been in touch with The Samaritans and the ­Independent Monitoring Board since he’s been in Frankland.

“And the IMB, who ­regularly visit the jail, will have told him he is within his rights to have these calls and might have helped him to apply.”

Digwa and his mother were convicted in May, with Kaur sentenced last month.

, released a ­statement saying they were “incredibly disappointed” at the three-year term handed down at Southampton crown court.

But they promised to continue to fight for the “full truth”.

MP said: “While Henry Nowak’s family and friends struggle to get over their loss and his ­terrible death, his despicable killer is enjoying perks in jail.

“He shouldn’t have any ­privileges — it’s a disgrace — and should not be allowed to speak to his mother who hid the murder weapon.”

Justice sources said Digwa had not yet had a call with his mum. When they do, the pair will be told they have to speak in English so they can be ­monitored.

Digwa’s family also speak Punjabi — with he and his brother talking in the language in a van on the way to court.

The insider explained: “Digwa will be put in a room with a tablet or laptop linked to his mum on a device in her jail and staff will be outside the door at each prison.

“But it would also be monitored in the security room — and if they started to speak Punjabi or to ­discuss the murder the call would be cut off. Staff will have to warn him about that and it will be one of the conditions of the call.”

Sikh Digwa — described as “weapons-obsessed” at his murder trial — was held in Winchester Prison before being moved to at the end of June.

He has since cowered in segregation, fearing he could be targeted on a wing like , who was fatally attacked at the jail in February.

But he is now terrified after being moved on to a landing last week.

He has also been warned he is a target — especially from Polish gangsters said to want revenge due to Henry’s heritage.

Our source added: “Digwa is on a wing now and it’s fair to say he’s s****ing himself. He has been warned he is a target for many groups — but particularly Polish gangsters. Although Henry was English, they see him as one of their own because of his name and Polish heritage.

“They see it as a racist killing of a Polish lad and want revenge.

“But Digwa could have problems from anyone and there are some white supremacists in there, plus ex-military, who would hate him for what he’s done.”

The Prison Service said: “This prisoner is being managed within the prison estate in line with the severity of the heinous offences for which he was convicted.”
