The myriad challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Africa &#8212; inadequate financing, education and input distribution &#8212; persist and greatly affect the agricultural output on the continent. But startups are providing innovative solutions to these problems, and South Africa&#8217;s <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/" target="_blank">Khula</a> is an example. The startup, launched in 2018, is finding its niche in the ever-growing industry. 
Today, it announced a $1.3 million seed round to scale operations across the country.
On the surface, it would seem agritech in Africa hasn&#8217;t taken off as exponentially as other tech-operated industries. But it has: The agritech sector grew 44% year-on-year between 2016 and 2019, and the continent has the highest number of agritech services in the developing world, reaching more than 33 million smallholder farmers, according to a <a href="http://farmersreviewafrica.com/africa-to-become-a-global-hub-for-agritech/" target="_blank">report</a> from Farmers Review Africa. 
<a href="https://za.linkedin.com/in/karidas-tshintsholo-0301bb78" target="_blank">Karidas Tshintsholo</a>, <a href="https://za.linkedin.com/in/matthew-piper" target="_blank">Matthew Piper</a> and <a href="https://za.linkedin.com/in/jackson-dyora-169362189" target="_blank">Jackson Dyora</a> founded Khula three years ago. Khula provides small-scale farmers with software and a marketplace to grow their business. But this description doesn&#8217;t do justice to the painstaking problem Khula is solving.
Before Khula, Tshintsholo and Piper were school and business partners. They worked on consulting gigs after dropping out of college a year before graduation. But while it allowed them to meet with clients in various disciplines, the consulting business wasn&#8217;t exhilarating enough.
&#8220;We always wanted something to do something more impactful, something more meaningful, something that could really change the way that the world works,&#8221;  Tshintsholo told TechCrunch. As time went on, agritech seemed like the path to take due to both founders&#8217; experiences. 
Africa is home to 60% of the world&#8217;s arable land. <a href="https://news.microsoft.com/en-xm/2021/06/15/africa-is-set-to-become-a-global-hub-for-agritech/" target="_blank">Research</a> also shows agritech in Africa is projected to reach a value of $1 trillion by 2030. But a trip to Israel made Piper wonder why the country &#8212; although half of its land is considered a desert &#8212; had more agricultural produce than African countries.
&#8220;It didn&#8217;t make sense that we have more land than any other continent,&#8221; Tshintsholo said. &#8220;And pretty much everyone on the continent is a farmer and we&#8217;re buying food more than we were selling. We wondered how that was possible, considering how big of competitive advantage agriculture is?&#8221; 
Further research and spending time with farmers exposed another problem: how intermediaries ripped off smallholder farmers in the country.

The agricultural industry in South Africa is known to favor industrial agriculture. And like most parts of Africa, smallholder farmers have it rough as they face a plethora of challenges, from marketing and selling to transportation of their goods and produce.
Typically, farmers take their produce to a large warehouse where big aggregators pick up the produce and sell it. The problem here is that most products are sold on consignment, which means there are no guarantees farmers will make a sale. The goods, mostly perishable, are also bound to experience drops in price, and there&#8217;s a huge lack of transparency, allowing middlemen to rip off farmers. 
&#8220;I think the penny dropped for us was when we started playing detective. We followed these farmers and noticed what big companies listed on the stock exchange did: Go to these physical markets, pick up the produce and then sell to the formal market. They&#8217;d pick it up for R3.50 and sell it for R11.00. They literally added nothing to the value chain other than just picking it up and dropping it off.&#8221;
In some cases, farmers could sell their produce to a processor who subsequently sells it to a supermarket at a much higher price. The supermarket also makes a profit by selling to individual consumers. So what a farmer sold for R3.50 ($0.24) might end up at R30 ($2.07) in an individual consumer&#8217;s hands. That&#8217;s not all; farmers must also pay commissions to these middlemen and municipalities they operate in.
&#8220;This was when we knew that this was a struggle, and this was the problem we wanted to address,&#8221; Tshintsholo said. &#8220;But then, in addressing that problem, we didn&#8217;t go live initially. Agriculture can be very complex. What we have now is something that we call the Khula ecosystem, and this is because the industry is very interconnected.&#8221;
Khula wants to tackle all these issues at once and provide farmers with liquidity, access and a market. The platform is an ecosystem made with three products.
The Inputs App allows farmers to access approved agricultural inputs and services from local and international suppliers.
The second is the Fresh Produce Marketplace, targeted at farmers with challenges cited earlier. It allows farmers to sell produce directly to local and international formal bulk buyers. By allowing farmers to engage and negotiate prices with suppliers, the platform aims to reduce the access middlemen have that has led to the exploitation of farmers.  
Then, the Funder Dashboard connects institutional investors with farmers who meet their funding mandates.
&#8220;The reason we&#8217;ve gone with this ecosystem approach is that it&#8217;s more of a sticky business model,&#8221; Tshintsholo said. &#8220;So we want to allow farmers to use our ecosystem to buy the products they need and get the services they need.&#8221;
Khula has seen reasonable traction since launching. The company has signed up more than 3,000 farmers, and over 100 suppliers now work with the company. This year, the startup was <a href="https://disrupt-africa.com/2021/06/21/15-startups-selected-for-6th-google-for-startups-accelerator-africa/" target="_blank">accepted</a> into the Google for Startups Accelerator Class 6 alongside 14 other African companies.
While the company is just announcing this investment, it closed the round last year. It was led by<a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/" target="_blank"> AECI</a>, one of the continent&#8217;s biggest agrochemical companies. South African impact investor E Squared Investments also participated.
In addition to the financial firepower Khula receives from its lead investor, it will also get access to AECI&#8217;s wide distribution network to scale its inputs app. With 132 depots across the country, Khula says it can deliver products in every province, in every major agriculture region.
Tshintsholo says AECI is the kind of investor Khula hopes to have as it progresses: a long-term partner interested in execution and not quarterly updates.
&#8220;We did not want an investor at the table who was only going to ask us how we’d performed in a specific quarter. We wanted a long-term partner that would execute with us. A partner with a great reputation in the industry and an incredible distribution network, a partner whose long-term success was tied to a business model like ours. And AECI fits that description perfectly for us.&#8221;
“Khula has very attractive fundamentals, a sizable addressable market, app development capabilities, key agri-business networks and a management team that wishes to work with AECI as their preferred agri-input and technical advisory partner,&#8221; Quintin Cross, the managing director of AECI Plant Health, said in a statement.

You may think that preparing healthy, delicious dinners at home is a complicated process, but I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be.



Even though I love food and enjoy cooking, I like to keep it simple when it comes to mealtime. This means choosing recipes that are easy to follow and don’t involve complicated cooking techniques or seemingly never-ending steps.



Here are 10 of my go-to simple dinner recipes that can help you get a healthy meal on the table quickly.



<h2>1. Stuffed sweet potatoes</h2>



Sweet potatoes are loaded with beneficial nutrients like beta carotene, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber (<a href="https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-app.html#/food-details/169307/nutrients" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">1Trusted Source</a>).



Plus, they’re delicious and pair well with just about anything. This makes them the perfect base on which to build a filling meal.



At my house, we prepare stuffed sweet potatoes at least once a week. I roast a whole sweet potato, then stuff it with ingredients like sautéed veggies, beans, chicken, and cheese.



This meal is super versatile, and you can choose from a variety of flavor combinations. You can try out one of the simple recipes below or wing it and simply pile your favorite ingredients onto a roasted sweet potato.

Grain bowls are a hit in my kitchen. My husband and I love how simple and adaptable grain bowls are and frequently prepare this dinner when we’re craving a flavorful yet easy-to-prepare meal.



I follow a gluten-free diet, so we use gluten-free grains like quinoa and brown rice. However, you can use any grain you want for grain bowls, including farro, millet, and barley.



Grains provide an important source of fiber and other nutrients like magnesium. We regularly use eggs as the protein source for quick and tasty dinners, including frittatas.



Eggs have you covered when it comes to healthy fat and protein, so all you need to do is add a variety of your favorite veggies to cover your fiber needs.

I like to serve frittata with some sliced avocado or fresh fruit. It’s a filling meal that you can enjoy at any time of the day or night. Frittatas are super simple to make, and you can whip them up in under an hour.

Start with a base of your favorite greens, such as spinach, mixed greens, arugula, kale, or romaine. Add a few more veggies, such as peppers, cucumbers, carrots, broccoli, or red onions, to your greens to bump up the fiber content.



Then choose a protein source like grilled chicken, shrimp, salmon, or <a href="https://healthonhome.com/12-amazing-benefits-of-eating-eggs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hard-boiled eggs</a>. Adding a fiber-rich carb source, such as beans or roasted sweet potatoes, will bump the fullness factor even higher.

Next, pick a source of protein. I like to use chicken breast or ground chicken or, if I want plant-based protein, I will add chickpeas.

Swiss alternative protein company Planted has raised its <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/swiss-maker-of-meat-alternatives-planted-will-expand-and-diversify-with-18m-series-a" target="_blank">second</a> CHF 17M (about $18.5M at present) round of the year, a &#8220;pre-B&#8221; fundraise that will help it continue its growth and debut new products. Over time the process has improved as well. &#8220;We added fermentation/biotech technologies to enhance taste and texture,&#8221; wrote CEO and co-founder Christoph Jenny in an email to TechCrunch. &#8220;Meaning 1) we can create structures without form limitation and 2) can add a broader taste profile.&#8221;
The latest advance is schnitzel, which is of course a breaded and fried piece of pounded-thin meat style popular around the world, but especially in the company&#8217;s core markets of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Jenny noted that Planted&#8217;s schnitzel is produced as one piece, not pressed together from smaller bits. &#8220;The taste and texture benefit from fermentation approach, that makes the flavor profile mouth watering and the texture super juicy,&#8221; he said, though of course we will have to test it to be sure. Expect schnitzel to debut in Q3.
It&#8217;s the first of several planned &#8220;whole&#8221; or &#8220;prime&#8221; cuts, larger pieces that can be prepared like any other piece of meat — the team says their products require no special preparation or additives and can be dropped in as 1:1 replacements in most recipes. Right now the big cuts are leaving the lab and entering consumer testing for taste tuning and eventually scaling.
The funding round came from &#8220;Vorwerk Ventures, Gullspång Re:food, Movendo Capital, Good Seed Ventures, Joyance, ACE &amp; Company (SFG strategy) and Be8 Ventures,&#8221; and was described as a follow-on to March&#8217;s <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/swiss-maker-of-meat-alternatives-planted-will-expand-and-diversify-with-18m-series-a" target="_blank">CHF 17M series A</a>. No doubt the exploding demand for alternative proteins and growing competition in the space has spurred Planted&#8217;s investors to opt for more aggressive growth and development strategies.
The company plans to enter several new markets over Q3 and Q4, but the U.S. is still a question mark due to COVID-19 restrictions on travel. Jenny said they are preparing so that they can make that move whenever it becomes possible, but for now Planted is focused on the European market.

Planted raises another $18M to expand its growing plant-based meat empire (and add schnitzel)

<a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/" target="_blank">Gopuff</a>, the startup that&#8217;s helped kickstart a new category of food delivery in the U.S. &#8212; &#8220;instant&#8221; delivery of essential groceries and other home goods for a flat fee of $1.95, 24 hours a day &#8212; has closed a huge tranche of funding to help it scale its service further across the country and globe. It&#8217;s raised $1 billion in a Series H round that values the Philadelphia-based company at $15 billion.
New backers Blackstone’s Horizons platform, Guggenheim Investments, Hedosophia, and Adage Capital, and previous backers Fidelity Management and Research Company, Softbank Vision Fund 1, Atreides Management, and Eldridge Capital all participated in the round.
This news confirms our scoop of <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/07/22/filing-instant-grocery-startup-gopuff-is-raising-750m-more-at-a-13-5b-valuation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">last week</a>, when reported on this Series H as it was still being closed.
Gopuff said it plans to use the funding to continue expanding in North America, the UK (where it has already <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20210506006037/en/Gopuff-Jumpstarts-International-Expansion-with-Acquisition-of-UK-Based-Fancy" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">acquired</a> one company, Fancy, and, sources tell us, is acquiring another, Dija), and Europe; on more hiring; and to continue building out the tech platform that bridges an ecosystem that includes customers, drivers, suppliers and distribution centers.
It currently operates 450 sites across North America and the UK, with includes more than 285 dark stores (or &#8220;micro-fulfillment centers&#8221; in Gopuff&#8217;s words), plus more than 185 retailers by way of its acquisition of BevMo earlier this year.
One of the reasons that Gopuff has raised such a large sum is that building out food-based, logistics-fueled, transportation business along all of those parameters is capital-intensive.
But also, that effort to grow is coming amidst a strong surge of competition. Getir out of Turkey, backed by Sequoia and others and <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/07/01/instant-grocery-startup-getir-makes-its-first-acquisition-to-expand-into-spain-and-italy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">most recently valued at $7.5 billion</a>, is also aggressively expanding. And just looking at Europe, there are a wave of others such as <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/flink-the-german-grocery-delivery-startup-raises-240m-after-launching-just-6-months-ago" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Flink</a>, <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/gorillacorn" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Gorillas</a>, <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/spains-glovo-picks-up-528m-as-the-food-deliver-market-continues-to-heat-up" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Glovo</a>, <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/zapp" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Zapp</a>, <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/dija-launch" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Cajoo</a>, and <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2020/08/05/london-based-weezy-raises-seed/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Weezy</a> also bulking up their bank accounts to throw their delivery bags into the ring. (In the U.S., established delivery giants like DoorDash will also be moving deeper into Gopuff&#8217;s territory.)
Gopuff believes it can give all of these and others a run for their money. Founded back in 2013 by Rafael Ilishayev and Yakir Gola &#8212; now co-CEOs &#8212; while they were still in university to fill a gap they saw in the market for students like themselves, Gopuff has expanded well beyond that by catering to anyone looking for a quick and relatively low-cost way of getting essential goods without physically going out to get those items themselves.
In a stretch of time where many of us were either being ordered by our municipal governments, or acting on our own decisions, to stay in place to curtail the spread of Covid-19, Gopuff&#8217;s star rose quickly as an easy way of complying without compromising our consumerist tendencies.
But Companies like Getir out of Turkey &#8212; which has been around for years also building out a model of &#8220;instant&#8221; delivery of essential goods &#8212; have demonstrated that there is staying power to the concept, and that is what Gopuff is betting on, too.
“Gopuff has quietly built a very strong business and solidified itself as the leading player, continuing to define this evolving category,” said Scott Minerd, Global Chief Investment Officer of Guggenheim Investments, in a statement. “Rafael and Yakir are focused on maintaining fiscal responsibility while having the ability to successfully execute on strategic growth opportunities. This measured approach along with Gopuff’s impressive offering has only just scratched the surface. We are thrilled to support this incredibly strong company and look forward to being part of Gopuff’s journey and continued expansion.”
Part of Gopuff&#8217;s strategy has been to augment the basic instant delivery of essentials model with more efficient distribution along with a wider vision of what constitutes essentials.
So in addition to building out more localized “dark” stores to more easily distribute goods to customers who buy them, that has included starting “Gopuff kitchens” to make and deliver ready-made food; buying alcohol retailer <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/gopuff-acquires-bevmo" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">BevMo for $350 million</a> in November 2020; and acquiring more logistics technology, in the form of buying <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/06/17/delivery-service-gopuff-acquires-rideos-for-115-million-plus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">rideOS for $115 million</a>.
Gopuff itself has been on a fundraising tear to finance all of this. It was <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/gopuff-new-funding" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">only in March</a> that it raised $1.15 billion at an $8.9 billion valuation, which came just months after a $380 million round at a $3.8 billion valuation. Together the three most recent rounds total around $2.5 billion in funding in the space of 10 months, and the idea here seems to be that there may be more of where that came from.

Meet <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/ target="_blank">Kitchenful</a>, a new German startup backed by Y Combinator that wants to make it easier to cook at home by taking care of menu ideas and grocery shopping. The service is currently available in early access in Germany with a focus on Berlin and Munich.
When you sign up to Kitchenful, you first have to set your preferences and goals. You can choose vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free and gluten-free options, but you can also focus on slow carbs recipes, a diet focused on healthy fats, etc.
After that, you get a meal plan for the coming week. You can review and customize each meal. For instance, if you plan to have guests, you can add a couple of persons to your Tuesday dinner. You can also remove vegetables if you usually buy your vegetables at a farmers market.
Once you’re ready to order, a virtual grocery basket is automatically generated for the user. You can review, add something that isn’t on the list, such as household items, and confirm.
Kitchenful then transfers your list of items to a major supermarket near you. The startup doesn’t fulfill orders directly — they rely on partners for that part of the process. That’s why Kitchenful describes itself as a grocery concierge service.
“Our main revenue stream is a concierge fee which we collect directly from our users for creating personalized weekly menus, handling the basket creation process, providing personalized cooking instructions for the recipes as well as leftover ideas. Additionally, we receive a commission from our supermarket partners per generated order,” Kitchenful co-founder and CEO Christian Schiller told me.
This isn’t Schiller’s first experience in food delivery. He previously spent four years as Vice President of Product at <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/ target="_blank">HelloFresh</a>, a popular meal-kit company.
Kitchenful is just getting started. It has raised $1 million from Y Combinator, N26 co-founder and CEO Valentin Stalf, Souq co-founder Samih Toukan, HighSnobiety’s David Fischer, DurstExpress MD Maik Ludewig, and Mendeley co-founder and CEO Victor Henning.
The company has already established partnerships with REWE in Germany, Walmart and Kroger in the U.S. By partnering with supermarkets, Kitchenful can offer a great variety of products at supermarket prices.
It’s a different take on meal kits with a different approach to logistics, so it’s going to be interesting to see if Kitchenful becomes a popular alternative to both grocery delivery and meal-kit services.

Kitchenful combines meal planning with a grocery concierge service

Meet <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/ target="_blank">Gourmey</a>, a new French startup that recently raised a $10 million founding round in equity and debt. The startup is working on meat grown in laboratories from animal cells. In particular, the company is focusing on poultry and aims to convince chefs that they should use the company’s products in their restaurants.
“We’ve been raising animals for 20,000 years,” co-founder and CEO Nicolas Morin-Forest told me. “We grow cells, which is much more efficient because you only produce what you eat.”
Victor Sayous and Antoine Davydoff, the two other co-founders, have a background in molecular and cell biology. When they teamed up to create a startup, they started looking at intensive livestock farming.
“When you dip your toes in that, you realize that this isn’t exclusively about animal welfare —&nbsp;it’s also about the planet, humans,” Morin-Forest said.
Gourmey is part of a group of startups that want to create meat alternatives and turn them into mass-market products. The first generation of startups that wanted to replace traditional meat bet heavily on plant-based substitutes. <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/tag/beyond-meat" target="_blank">Beyond Meat</a> and <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/livekindly-screams-its-way-to-the-top-of-new-plant-brands-with-the-close-of-a-335-million-round" target="_blank">Livekindly Collective</a> are some well-known examples.
More recently, a new generation of startups have been focusing on cell-based meat, such as <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/eat-just-the-alt-protein-company-formerly-known-as-hampton-creek-has-raised-another-200-million" target="_blank">Eat Just</a>, <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/ target="_blank">Mosa Meat</a> and <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/ target="_blank">Meatable</a>. Gourmey is the first French startup working on lab-grown meat.

Like other lab-grown meat startups, Gourmey relies on stem cells. Combined with the right nutrients at the right temperature, those cells mature in a bioreactor.
Gourmey is starting with a premium product and a premium distribution strategy. The startup has been working on cultivated foie gras or — as they say — slaughter-free foie gras. Reproducing the taste of foie gras is also a complex task, which means that Gourmey is setting high expectations.
In some countries, there’s such a stigma attached to foie gras that it has been removed from supermarket shelves. As a result, some people might be tempted by lab-grown foie gras. Gourmey hopes that chefs in particular will try its first product and use it in their high-end restaurants. Gourmey hopes to sell its product more or less at the same price as regular foie gras.
The idea is to launch more mass-market products as the startup scales. Once it has optimized its production lines and there’s enough demand for Gourmey’s products, you can expect to see other chicken and duck products.
There are some regulatory hurdles to overcome before lab-grown startups can sell their products around the world. Eat Just started selling lab-grown meat <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/eat-just-to-sell-lab-grown-meat-in-singapore-after-gaining-world-first-regulatory-approval" target="_blank">in Singapore</a> but it could take several years before you see cultivated meat in Europe for instance. Food safety regulators will have to approve those new products.
When it comes to Gourmey’s funding, Point Nine and Air Street Capital are co-leading the $10 million seed round. Heartcore Capital, Partech, Big Idea Ventures, Eutopia, Ataraxia, Beyond Investing ans several angel investors are also investing. Gourmey also received some support from public institutions, such as Bpifrance and the European Commission.
“Cultivated meat is one of the most promising solutions to deliver energy-efficient, sustainable proteins to the world,” Point Nine managing partner Christoph Janz said in a statement. “However, taste parity will remain the key success factor. We have been truly impressed by Gourmey’s delicious products and the company’s ability to progress both on the science and the flavor at record speed.”
With this funding, the company plans to create its pilot production line in Paris. It expects to be able to sell its foie gras products in late 2022 or early 2023.

Beyond Meat today announced the arrival of its new plant-based Chicken Tenders at upward of 400 U.S. based restaurants. The news follows continued growth for the California-based faux meat giant, which includes expansion to Walmart stores, Taco Bell restaurants and a big push into China over the past year.
The company says it’s a different product entirely from Beyond’s Chicken Strips despite bearing a similar name. That product predated the company’s wildly popular Beyond Burger patties, but were discontinued back in 2019 due to a lack of popularity compared to other offerings.

The new recipe is largely made of fava beans and peas, contains 14 grams of protein a serving and is less than 40% the saturated fat of standard chicken tenders. The company says there’s no cholesterol, antibiotics or hormones, which not a lot of big-name chicken producers can say.
“As with all our products, Beyond Chicken Tenders offer delicious taste and an exceptional culinary experience, along with strong nutritional benefits,” CIO Dariush Ajami said in a press release tied to the news. “Innovation is at the heart of Beyond Meat, and Beyond Chicken Tenders are the latest example of our mission to create groundbreaking, tasty options that are better for people and for our planet.”

Beyond Meat launches plant-based chicken tenders at US restaurants

Zomato, a food delivery startup in India, said on Thursday it has <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/indian-food-delivery-startup-zomato-files-for-an-ipo" target="_blank">boosted its plan</a> to raise $1.3 billion in its initial public offering, which opens on July 14 and closes July 16.
The loss-making startup said it will price its shares in the range of 72 Indian rupees (96 cents) to 76 ($1) and is targeting an upper limit valuation of $8.56 billion.
Zomato, which competes with Swiggy &#8212; the market leader according to several industry estimates &#8212; said after a successful IPO it will have about $2 billion in the bank. It plans to list on Indian stock exchanges.
The 12-year-old Gurgaon-headquartered Indian startup &#8212; which counts Info Edge, Temasek, Tiger Global, and Ant Group among its largest investors and has raised over $2.2 billion to date &#8212; is the first high-profile tech startup in India to explore the public markets.
In a virtual press conference on Thursday, the startup executives said Zomato, which has search and discovery in nearly two dozen markets, will focus largely on India and will explore categories such as online grocery delivery in the future.

The executives dismissed Amazon as a serious competitor for now. “There&#8217;s no major impact on market share from Amazon so far,” the company&#8217;s chief financial officer said. Amazon entered the food delivery market last year and is operational in just Bangalore for now.
Zomato also revealed its latest financial on Thursday. For the financial year that ended in March this year, its revenue was down 23% to $283 million, and it also shrunk its losses to $110 million, down 66% from the same period a year ago.

Zomato targets $1.3 billion IPO at as high as $8.6 billion valuation

Licious, a Bangalore-based startup that sells fresh meat and seafood online, has raised $192 million in a new financing round as it looks to expand its footprint beyond the South Asian market.
The new round &#8212; a Series F &#8212; was led by Singapore’s investment firm Temasek and Multiples Private Equity. The round, which brings the six-year-old Indian firm’s to-date raise to over $285 million, values the startup at more than $650 million (according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter), <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/12/16/licious-raises-30m-to-grow-its-meat-and-seafood-e-commerce-platform-in-india/" target="_blank">up from $285 million in December 2019 Series E funding</a>.
Existing investors 3one4 Capital, Bertelsmann India Investments, Vertex Growth Fund, and Vertex Ventures also participated in the new round, and some early investors sold some of their stakes.
<a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/ target="_blank">Licious</a> operates an eponymous e-commerce platform where it sells meat and seafood in over a dozen Indian cities. The startup has built a supply chain network across several Indian cities to be able to procure meat and seafood, keep them fresh, and deliver within hours of the order.
In recent months, the startup says it has accelerated its growth as people increase their protein consumption in a bid to improve their immunity.
It didn’t disclose exact figures, but said the startup has seen a 500% growth in the past 12 months and delivered to more than 2 million unique customers.
“This is just the beginning in our pursuit of building an exemplary and iconic tech-led D2C (direct-to-consumer) brand,” said Vivek Gupta and Abhay Hanjura in a joint statement Friday.
According to industry estimates, India&#8217;s online meat market is worth over $4.4 billion and has grown by over 2.5x since the pandemic hit last year.
Licious, which competes with FreshToHome, plans to deploy the fresh capital to expand to “multiple geographies,” it said, without identifying any market. The startup is also making investments to broaden its tech and supply chain networks, it said.
The startup’s co-founders have “revolutionised the purchase of poultry, seafood and meat in the country delighting customers with their promise of quality, freshness and timely delivery,” said Sridhar Sankararaman, MD, Multiples.
