WITH temperatures set to soar to 30C again across the country this week, millions of us will be grabbing a scoop of ice cream to cool off.
But simple flavours such as chocolate and vanilla won’t do for customers of “the Willy Wonka of ice cream” Ugur Vata, who sells wacky offerings including peach with jalapeno and avocado with seaweed from his deli in .

Ugur, 62, even has the likes of lobster, black garlic and asparagus ice cream on sale.
The unusual flavours have attracted celebrity fans including and football legend .
Ugur says: “I’m not your average ice cream man, I’m offering my customers an experience.
“Every ingredient has a story. There is, of course, an easy way but we’re doing it the hard way.
“Yes, you can buy ice cream anywhere. You can go to the supermarket, but our flavours are special and I think people see that as they keep coming back for more.”
Turkish-born Ugur opened The Galley Creamery And Deli in Woodbridge five years ago after the restaurant he had run for 30 years closed during Covid.
“People always say to me, ‘You’re crazy’, and maybe I am. This isn’t the sort of ice cream you find on supermarket shelves.
“One of the most popular flavours is black garlic. I get the colour from charcoal and I use olives, balsamic vinegar and Japanese black sesame seeds. I call it ‘curiosity’.

“People are always puzzled as they can’t work out what it is.
“I like people’s taste and mind to be connected.
“The lobster sorbet was also popular. It is my passion to make unusual flavours.”
Ugur says Benedict’s favourite is mint choc chip, which he has since renamed Ben’s Mint Choc.
“Everyone is always surprised as it is white, and when it churns they expect to see the green colour.
“But my flavour is made with pure peppermint, which is white and high quality, plus 70 per cent Belgian chocolate chips.”
Sadly, you won’t find lobster sorbet at Tesco but supermarkets are bringing out an increasingly wide range of flavours in a bid to lure customers.
Here we rate some of the more unusual ones.
WE TEST ODDBALL SUPERMARKET SCOOPS
Peach Melba £3.50, Waitrose – 3/5
Waitrose Peach Melba is rich and creamy with pieces of diced peach and a tangy raspberry puree running through it Credit: Waitrose
A RICH and creamy ice cream with pieces of diced peach and a tangy raspberry puree running through it.
Refreshing, and the very essence of summer.
However, watch your serving size as it is 192cals per 100g and has a high sugar content with over 20g for the same amount.
I’d have liked a few more peach bits too.
Not Fried Chicken, £4, – 1/5
Iceland’s Not Fried Chicken tastes surprisingly good Credit: Iceland
I’M feeling slightly nervous as this is designed to look like a drumstick and does not look appetising.
But it tastes surprisingly good.
It’s actually a chocolate-covered pretzel stick surrounded by vanilla ice cream, dipped in a white chocolate and cornflake coating.
Expensive for essentially a small ice cream on a stick, with 23g sugar per 100g.
Ottolenghi Roasted Pistachio & Sour Cherry £6, – 4/5
Ottolenghi Roasted Pistachio & Sour Cherry is a luxurious grown-up ice cream Credit: Waitrose
A LUXURIOUS and grown-up ice cream with a nutty pistachio base, crunchy pistachio pieces and a tangy cherry swirl.
The sour cherry is bold and tangy and cuts through the creamy ice cream.
I also like the crunchy pistachio pieces which gave a great texture.
Sweet, at 17g of sugar per 100ml, but moreish.
Finest Sicilian Lemon & Limoncello £3.50, – 5/5
Tesco Finest Sicilian Lemon & Limoncello is subtle but incredibly moreish and scored full marks Credit: Tesco
MY fave of those tasted.
The lemon taste is subtle but incredibly moreish.
There are little sponge cake pieces in it, which were delicious.
The limoncello flavour packed a punch – 3.5 per cent of the ingredients were lemon liquor.
Overall it is light and refreshing in flavour but still had 20g of sugar per 100g.
Jude’s Matcha Green Tea £5.75, – 2/5
Jude’s Matcha Green Tea is not overly sweet and is refreshing and light Credit: Sainsburys
MATCHA is being thrown into everything at the moment.
But so many products don’t really taste of the green tea leaves.
This has the flavour spot on.
It’s not overly sweet and is refreshing and light.
But it doesn’t come cheap.
And don’t be fooled into thinking it’s good for you.
It still contains 117 calories and 12g of sugar per 100ml.
Collection West Country Flat White £4.50, – 4/5
M&S’ Collection West Country Flat White makes for a sophisticated pudding Credit: Ocado
A LOVELY coffee ice cream which makes for a sophisticated pudding.
It’s smooth, rich and has just the perfect hint of Colombian coffee.
Flat white lovers will love this.
Just like your coffee, though, it’s hiding calories with 213 calories and 16.5g of sugar in a 100g serving.
Not the cheapest but it oozes quality.
