They subsequently joined 3,000 conscripts, reservists, and regular troops from Finland in Vuosanka, located about 20 miles from and 400 miles north of Helsinki.
The ongoing war has heightened concerns regarding a potential Russian invasion.
The British contingent was impressed by the cold-weather skills of their Finnish counterparts and recognized the seriousness with which the Finns are preparing.
Major Henry Wootton, who leads the company, remarked, “It is truly impressive to observe a country that is focused on defense.
“They have a well-defined defense plan, and everyone contributes to that through their conscript service at the age of 18.”
Describing many Finns as “outdoorsmen and women,” Major Wootton noted that his troops had learned from their hosts about adapting to the harsh conditions, despite having less experience in military operations.
He added, “As a professional army, we have had more time to train, but we also start at a disadvantage because we are not as familiar with the country and its environment.”
Rifleman Aaron Hunter, 21, from Wakefield, stated that the threat of a Russian invasion was a significant factor for their training in Finland.
He said, “It’s a major concern for the Finns, and they view it as a very real threat that could emerge at any moment – who knows?”
