A GOALKEEPER in Bolivia refused to save a penalty in protest at the referee’s decision to give a controversial spot kick.
Atletico Independiente secured a 3-2 win over rivals Wilstermann Cooperativas with a late penalty scored in the TWENTY FIFTH minute of injury time.
The incredible delay was caused by players arguing with official Carlos Arteaga over his contentious call.
Wilstermann keeper Gustavo Tesonotte was penalised after the referee claimed he fouled an attacker as he was trying to round him in the box.
The decision certainly looked harsh as Tesonotte didn’t appear to make any contact with the player.
He looked to have got the ball and was fuming when the penalty was given.
Tesonotte and his Wilstermann team-mates surrounded Arteaga in protest and the row went on for an incredible 20 minutes.
But despite the complaints, the referee stuck to his guns and refused to change his mind on the penalty.
Tesonotte decided to make a stand in the build-up to the penalty and stood to the right of the goal by the post.
That allowed Ernesto Adiri to easily roll in the penalty to win the game for the home side.
According to BBC Sport , the Bolivian Football Federation have since suspended Arteaga indefinitely from all tournaments in the country.
The unusual incident came in the fifth round of the Simon Bolivar Cup.
The farcical moment brought back memories of the infamous Afcon final between and over another contentious penalty.
