Former Governor of Niger State and Chairman of the Former Governors’ Forum, Babangida Aliyu, has raised concerns about what he views as Nigeria’s perilous shift towards a one-party system dominated by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During an interactive session between the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and the Former Ministers’ Forum, Aliyu voiced his apprehension regarding the diminishing political landscape, forced defections, and the erosion of opposition institutions.
“We are alarmed by the aggressive tactics employed by the ruling APC to eliminate the opposition. The persistent recruitment of opposition figures and the misuse of state institutions to intimidate dissenting opinions are clear signs that Nigeria is perilously moving towards a one-party state,” he stated.
Aliyu stressed that a robust opposition is vital for a flourishing democracy and congratulated the newly elected PDP National Working Committee, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, expressing complete confidence in their leadership.
“The PDP is not finished; it is evolving,” Aliyu remarked, commending Turaki’s efforts to revitalize the party with renewed determination, discipline, and reconciliation.
In response, PDP National Chairman Turaki underscored the party’s 16-year governance legacy, describing it as a standard for national development, characterized by economic growth, debt resolution, and the expansion of the middle class.
Turaki pointed out significant accomplishments, including the liberalization of the telecommunications sector, banking sector consolidation, settlement of the Paris Club debt, and the establishment of agencies like the EFCC and ICPC to combat corruption.
Also addressing the gathering, former Kano State Governor and ex-Minister Ibrahim Shekarau urged the new NWC to remain resolute, stating: “Do not falter; you have exceeded expectations.”
The forum’s endorsement of the PDP’s new leadership represents a commitment to enhancing the party’s role in Nigeria’s democracy amid growing concerns regarding political centralization under the APC.
