A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has urged religious, community, and political leaders across the nation to unite in support of President Bola Tinubu in the fight against terrorism.
Oyintiloye, a former legislator, made this appeal while addressing journalists on Sunday in Osogbo.
He emphasized that during this crucial time, Nigerians, regardless of their political or religious beliefs, should come together to assist the President in tackling the ongoing security challenges facing the nation.
Oyintiloye expressed concern over the threat made by former President Donald Trump of the United States to deploy military forces to Nigeria in response to alleged killings of Christians, stating that this should alarm every Nigerian.
The former lawmaker acknowledged that while the President and security agencies are striving to combat violent crimes in the country, it is essential for Nigerians to unite in order to defend their sovereignty.
He also pointed out that the current security crisis did not originate with the Tinubu administration but has developed over an extended period, evolving from terrorism to banditry. He insisted that Nigeria has never waged war against any specific religion.
“We must unite and rally behind the President during this time. Our religious or political affiliations are insignificant at this moment; what we require is togetherness and solidarity to safeguard the sovereignty of our beloved nation,” he stated.
While affirming that all religions in the country—Muslims, Christians, and others—have suffered the adverse effects of terrorism, he remarked that no particular faith can be singled out as the target of the heinous acts committed by these criminals.
Appreciating the United States' concerns about the security situation in Nigeria, he stated, “The sharing of intelligence and military equipment support from the US to combat insecurity will significantly aid Nigeria in addressing and overcoming the menace of insecurity.”
However, the APC chieftain advised Nigerians, particularly those in opposition, to be cautious with their remarks at this time, stressing that the consequences of their words will affect everyone.
Oyintiloye also called on the newly appointed military leaders to honor the trust placed in them by the President and to diligently work towards defeating terrorists in the country. He appealed to them to do everything within their capacity to validate their appointments during this critical period.
“This is not a time for partisan politics. We must all recognize that our hopes, ambitions, and dreams for public office depend entirely on the continued existence of Nigeria.
“Current leaders will eventually move on, but Nigerians must not fall into a trap that could threaten the nation's existence. With collaboration from all stakeholders, we have the capability to eradicate terrorism.
“While obtaining foreign support in terms of equipment is beneficial, deploying soldiers may complicate matters and create further issues. Political, religious, and community leaders must stand united in their commitment to protect the country.
“What President Tinubu requires at this moment is the backing of all Nigerians,” Oyintiloye concluded.
