UK laws around tattoos
HERE are the rules you need to be aware of regarding tattoos in the UK.
Under-18 tattooing is illegal
- The Tattooing of Minors Act 1969 makes it a criminal offence to tattoo someone under 18.
- The only legal exception is when the tattoo is done for medical reasons by a qualified medical practitioner (or under their supervision).
Parental consent doesn’t override the law
- Even if a parent or guardian gives permission, the tattooist would be breaking the law if the client is under 18.
Age verification is required
- Tattoo artists must take “reasonable precautions” to check a person is 18 or over.
- This means asking for ID (passport, driving licence, etc.) is common.
Meanwhile, someone else chimed in: “Nope! My daughter got one for her 16th. I drove her to Vegas to get it.”
But at the same time, one user slammed: “Yes, before 18 is too young. They can do what they want after they’re grown.”
A second thought it made Shannon a “bad mum,” as she gasped: “Yes!!! They are still growing and their skin is still stretching. Why would you allow that at a young age?”
Not only this, but one woman sighed: “Seriously, mum! You’re supposed to protect and nurture your children.”
Whilst another simply penned: “Yes it does! Really sad.”
