Built by married couple Keith and Jen Lovelock, the Airbnb has been filled with references to the world famous band, as well as nautical travel, and even includes a John Lennon-inspired mannequin.

Nestled into a wooded area in Marton, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand, the Yellow Submarine lives in it’s own”sea of green”, standing out amidst the foliage.

Keith revealed theto build, and comfortably sleeps four guests, with room left over for a fully-functioning kitchen and bathroom.

He said the pair had hosted many guests from around the world, including John Lennon’s family.

“We have had some of John Lennon’s relations turning up once. That was fascinating,” he said.

The family arrived not long after construction of the submarine was completed.

“They had the tour through and it was a very special day for us,” he said.

“They brought a lot of John’s paraphernalia along with them.”

Keith said inspiration to build the submarine has struck over a dinner table.

“The idea came a few years ago when I was in a yellow restaurant two hours south from here and I just said it out loud in front of the family – ‘I’ll build a yellow submarine'”, he explained.

“Years later and probably about $20,000 we had a yellow submarine.

“There was no design as such it was an interactive procedure. It is like suck it and see as you go.”

Keith, who resides near the unique holiday cabin, said he had never heard of Airbnb until his kids suggested he list the property on the popular holiday booking platform.

“The kids said to put it on Airbnb and I said ‘What’s Airbnb?’. The next thing they know it was on Airbnb and we have interesting people turning up from all around the world. It just took on a life of itself,” he said.

“The weird thing is people come here and they return to their childhood because it’s just make believe and kids they behave like adults, it’s interesting.”

Keith said interest in the listing got “out of hand” after the platform featured the Yellow Submarine in its “OMG” promotional category.

“The video … had about 60 million views before they took it down because it was getting out of hand,” he said.

“It’s been really weird, but in the end we’re just domestics washing on and cleaning and doing the changeover everyday and hanging out the washing and ironing before we get the next crew in.”

The former radio technician said the submarine was almost entirely built from up-cycled materials, including an old grain silo, spa bath and milking shed.

Apart from the obvious Beatles influence, Keith revealed three other themes – the Cold War, North Atlantic in 1942 and steampunk submarine.

From the earliest planning phase, he wanted to paint the submarine yellow.

To make the Airbnb stand out, he built it into its own “sea of green” – a wooded area.

The construction of the submarine was finished in 2019.

Entering through a ramp, the submarine displays a bulkhead door, around twenty portholes and even a ship’s wheel.

Adorned with many objects, Keith said visitors often leave belongings behind.

“We get a lot of stuff left behind because it’s so over decorated in the sub that it’s hard to discern one object from another so people often forget to take their belongings with them,” he said.

Visitors from around the world come to stay at the submarine all year round.

“We are not a destination in a holiday type resort,” Keith said.

“We’re a stopover so people use mostly one night, tick it off their bucket list, go ‘wow’ and then move on.

Keen travellers and Beatles fans can book to stay in the Yellow Submarine – which has a rating of 4.93 stars – from just $140 (£104) a night.
