A MAN has been charged with rape after a woman in her 30s was allegedly threatened and sexually assaulted outside of a school.

Police say the woman was threatened in Wallsend on October 27, before the stranger sexually assaulted her and fled the scene.

The following day police arrested a man, 27, in connection with the horror.

Yassim Ahmed, who identifies himself to be from Western Sahara, was charged with one count of attempted rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of theft.

He is due to appear at South East Northumberland Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning.

The woman continues to be supported by specially-trained officers.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Deavin, of Northumbria Police’s Safeguarding Department, previously said: “Firstly, my thoughts are with the victim-survivor who we will continue to offer all the specialist support we can during this time.

“We are also aware of some social media coverage regarding this incident, and we would like to take this opportunity to remind people that all victim-survivors of sexual offences have the right to anonymity and should not be identified.

“We were on scene in minutes of the report being received, and we have been conducting extensive enquiries to identify a suspect – but we’re now asking for the public’s help with that.”
