WHATSAPP has unveiled a new update that means you no longer have to share your phone number with others.

The messaging service is introducing the option for users to choose a username within the app.

According to WABetaInfo , the feature is currently being rolled out in phases to a “limited” number of users.

You can check if it’s available to you by heading into your settings.

The main advantage of having a username is that it allows you to keep your phone number private.

However, a phone number is still required to use the app.

There are also some rules for choosing a username.

It must be between three and 35 characters long and can include lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores.

It must also contain at least one letter and cannot include “www” or any domain-style endings.

You can link your username to and/or , but it cannot match an existing name on either platform.

will also offer an optional “username key”.

This four-digit code is required to send messages to a new username.
