Cricketer Jimmy Anderson also led teams in a charity edition of the classic quiz show.

They took the stage at the school that Rooney attended.

Parents bid for a place on each team.

MUTV presenter Helen Evans hosted the quiz, during which the sports stars shared anecdotes from their careers.

A source commented on this month’s event, part of a £5 million fundraiser at Cheadle Hulme School in Cheshire: “Tickets sold out quickly once it became known that Wayne would be attending.

“He and Jimmy were fantastic and had the audience laughing.”

The former striker, who celebrated his 40th birthday on Friday, joined the panel in August and has his own podcast.

Unfortunately for him, the long-running show was discontinued by the BBC in 2023.

The source added: “Wayne is somewhat introverted but has enjoyed his media engagements.

“He would be interested in A Question of Sport if the BBC decides to revive it.”
