MINSTREL KNIGHT (5.01 Ayr, nap)

Ed Bethell’s five-year-old went jumping last season – winning two from four starts – and there’s every chance he could be a stronger horse back on the Flat. The forecast all week suggests Ayr will get its share of rain and this strong stayer loves nothing more than a slog in the mud. He must put a poor run at Thirsk behind him but his record on soft ground is brilliant. He’s only a pound higher than when winning a huge pot at York two years ago and should take plenty of catching if allowed to roll in front.

EASY ANSWER (3.15 Yarmouth, nb)

Should be an easy answer for Oisin Murphy and Michael Bell. He was thought good enough to run in the Coventry at Royal Ascot and clearly he was not up to that level. However, his latest effort behind a subsequent Listed winner at Salisbury suggests he could prove well treated on his handicap debut.

PILU (3.45 Yarmouth, treble)

Was a brave winner at Newmarket last time. Roger Teal’s ace has top sprint handicap form, including two big efforts behind the smart Jazl earlier in the season. A 2lb rise for his latest victory is unlikely to trouble him.
