Marcus Rashford says he was racially abused on social media following Manchester United&#8217;s defeat in the Europa League final.
The 23-year-old, who has previously been a victim of online attacks, said he had received &#8220;at least 70 racial slurs&#8221; following United&#8217;s penalty shootout loss to Villarreal in Gdansk on Wednesday.
United, who lost 11-10 on penalties, later tweeted to say their players had been subjected to &#8220;disgraceful racist abuse&#8221;.
&#8220;At least 70 racial slurs on my social accounts counted so far,&#8221; Rashford wrote on Twitter. &#8220;For those working to make me feel any worse than I already do, good luck trying.
&#8220;I&#8217;m more outraged that one of the abusers that left a mountain of monkey emojis in my DM is a maths teacher with an open profile. He teaches children!! And knows that he can freely racially abuse without consequence&#8230;&#8221;
Last month English football, along with other sporting bodies, united for a four-day social media boycott to urge the companies to take a stronger stance over racial abuse.
Speaking before the latest incidents of abuse, England boss Gareth Southgate praised the job players had done in highlighting the issue.

&#8220;I do think there has been progress over the last year on the issue of racism because social media is just in general a poor reflection of what happens through society,&#8221; he told the BBC.
&#8220;But the reality is if it wasn&#8217;t social media these situations are happening on our streets at certain times.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer&#8217;s had success at Manchester United, but it&#8217;s not the success the club expects from its manager.
So when the Red Devils boss quickly got to transfer market talk after United&#8217;s loss to Villarreal in the Europa League Final, there was more than a little, &#8220;Really?&#8221; running through some critical minds.

&#8220;We are here now, we need to do better, we need to work better, work harder, cleverer,&#8221; Solskjaer said. &#8220;But as I said two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad all together is important for us to go even further. Because I&#8217;m sure our contenders or challengers will also want to improve and we want to improve as much as we can.&#8221;
Sure.
Of course.
But, dude.
United was close to a title on Wednesday, and Marcus Rashford missed a tight chance that could&#8217;ve given them a 2-1 lead in regulation before the match went to extra time and, eventually, ill-fated penalty kicks.
Unai Emery, a master of finals, used five of his six subs between the 60th and 88th minutes, and Villarreal&#8217;s new unit got its act together in the final 15 minutes of extra time.
Meanwhile, Solskjaer made one sub in the 100th minute and five more after the 113th minute. There was fear there. He took out Paul Pogba rather than putting him in an advanced role. He put in Fred for Mason Greenwood and left Donny van de Beek and Amad Diallo on the bench.
Yes, penalties are a tough way to decide a trophy. But Solskjaer did not go for it. At all.
Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes were brought in under his watch, and so were Alex Telles, Daniel James, and unused Van de Beek and Amad.
And these decisions are more than transfers. It turns out that Jesse Lingard can still play. Romelu Lukaku is also very good, and Chris Smalling fits that bill too.
Yes, Harry Maguire was hurt against Villarreal but it wasn&#8217;t defending that killed United&#8217;s hopes of a trophy. They weren&#8217;t brave. Solskjaer defenders will say they weren&#8217;t invested, weren&#8217;t United through and through.
But Solskjaer was timid in a lot of big games, perhaps traumatized by a 6-1 mashing at the hands of Jose Mourinho&#8217;s Spurs that led to a run of 0-0, 0-1, 0-0, 0-0, 0-0, 0-0, against traditional top six rivals before a March win over Man City.
So perhaps shame on us for believing that that win was the tipping point for Solskjaer&#8217;s bravery, as he beat Spurs 3-1 in April. He then danced past Real Sociedad and beat AC Milan, following it up by dominating Granada and bashing Roma.
But Emery got him on Wednesday, and the ex-Arsenal boss boasts a 3W-1D-2L record against Solskjaer. Leicester&#8217;s Brendan Rodgers the same. Jurgen Klopp is 2W-3D-1L against the Norwegian. Mikel Arteta&#8217;s unbeaten in three versus OGS.
Solskjaer is by no means terrible at his job nor tactics. He&#8217;s done well against Pep Guardiola and has a 5-0 record against celebrated underdog Graham Potter. Carlo Ancelotti&#8217;s yet to beat him and David Moyes and Frank Lampard largely couldn&#8217;t hang.
But on a big stage, in big games, Solskjaer is still sorting his way through the big shoes. He&#8217;s going to keep learning but will United succeed through that growing wisdom or do we need to just accept that he&#8217;s more of a Zinedine Zidane than a Jose Mourinho, an ego massager and reputation defender who uses his and his club&#8217;s aura to drive the bus.
In that case, sure: Keep buying guys until some combination delivers something shiny. They&#8217;ve bought young a la Real and the model could work. But it&#8217;s a little rich, pun intended, to simply say United couldn&#8217;t find a way through Villarreal because of personnel.
But the transfer talk also nods to fan unrest with the Glazers and Solskjaer is a canny operator in the media. But remember, he knows that second place and a bunch of &#8220;almosts&#8221; in cup play (while bombing out of the Champions League at the group stage) cannot be good enough when his rallying cry for players and fans is always about the mystique of the club.
&#8220;Second in the league, probably no one expected us to be second in the league after the start we had, after the lack of pre-season we had,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The boys have been really, really good but just came up short tonight, unfortunately. That&#8217;s penalties, we could have been sat here saying a successful season after the same game. But trophies matter and that&#8217;s what matters at this club. No, is the short answer.&#8221;
Well, if trophies matter, Ole, Wednesday was a big failure in things that matter &#8212; even without Maguire and on the lottery of penalties.

Liverpool fans were not always kind to Alberto Moreno when he was a member of the Anfield set, but he hasn&#8217;t lost affinity for his former club.
And he hasn&#8217;t lost enmity for their longtime rivals.
The Villarreal fullback implored Manchester United to &#8220;get out of here&#8221; after The Yellow Submarine beat the Red Devils to the UEFA Cup on Wednesday in Poland.

Moreno, 28, returned from a long-term knee injury in March and played the final 32 minutes of the win, converting a penalty in the win.
&#8220;You&#8217;ll never walk alone, siempre, siempre,&#8221; he yelled. Siempre Is the Spanish word for always.
Moreno played 141 times for Liverpool, scoring three goals with 11 assists before returning to La Liga in 2019, winning the Champions League with the Reds in 2018-19.

Marcus Rashford&#8217;s personal bonafides are well-established, and the still young Manchester United star knows he wasn&#8217;t at his best in a penalty kicks loss to Villarreal in the Europa League Final on Wednesday in Poland.
But the striker&#8217;s emotions had him passionately making his case for next season&#8217;s Red Devils following the loss after 1-1 over 120 minutes led to an 11-round penalty shootout.

&#8220;I know in every club they don&#8217;t have this sacrifice,&#8221; Rashford said. &#8220;In the top clubs they do. That&#8217;s why they win trophies. We&#8217;re close, I promise we&#8217;re close.&#8221;
&#8220;People say a lot about Man United going downhill, blah, blah, blah, blah but for me, the club, desire, hunger, talent, ability, the squad, we have everything to compete at the highest level,&#8221; Rashford said, <a href="https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/manchester-united-rashford-news-latest-20686751" target="_blank">via The Manchester Evening News</a>. &#8220;We just have to show it to the world and ourselves, show why we belong in the top places and why we need to win finals like this.

Rashford said that around a half-dozen players including the striker himself have been nursing injuries since September.
&#8220;When Ole came in, there was a process. The players we believe in this process and this isn&#8217;t the end of the process.&#8221;
He is &#8220;100 percent sure&#8221; that the people in the team room have enough to win silverware for the Old Trafford set, even if the club has gone four seasons without a trophy and have only reached two finals.
&#8220;I know in every club they don&#8217;t have this sacrifice,&#8221; Rashford said. &#8220;In the top clubs they do. That&#8217;s why they win trophies. We&#8217;re close, I promise we&#8217;re close.&#8221;

Manchester United player ratings against Villarreal in the Europa League final were tough to dish out, as a tense final in Gdansk played out <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/three-things-we-learned-as-villarreal-beats-manchester-united-in-uel-final" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">and they lost 11-10 on penalty kicks</a>.

After Gerard Moreno put Villarreal ahead in the first hald, Edinson Cavani equalized in the second half and a tense 120 minutes led to penalty kicks. 21 out of 22 were scored, as Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli scored his spot kick then saved David de Gea&#8217;s.
Unai Emery has now won the Europa League a record fourth time as Villarreal have reached the UEFA Champions League for next season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer&#8217;s wait for a trophy goes on, and United will now go five years without winning a trophy.

<h4>Manchester United player ratings</h4>
David de Gea: 6 &#8211; Didn&#8217;t really have a lot to do before the penalty kicks. Clawed away one dangerous cross in the second half. Didn&#8217;t get near the Villarreal penalties and then had his saved.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 6 &#8211; Didn&#8217;t get forward much and made a few trademark spider tackles.
Victor Lindelof: 5 &#8211; Moreno had the beating of him and switched off for Villarreal&#8217;s opener.
Eric Bailly: 6 &#8211; Did his best to hold the back line together. Subbed out through injury.
Luke Shaw: 5 &#8211; Just as guilty as Lindelof on the opening goal. Allowed Moreno to get across him. Shanked a shot with his right foot when free in the box. Occasional threat going forward. Lucky to score his penalty.

Scott McTominay: 8 &#8211; Set the tempo for the second half. Won tackles. Made things happen. Won the corner for Cavani&#8217;s goal. Dug deep defensively too. United&#8217;s man of the match.
Paul Pogba: 5 &#8211; Couldn&#8217;t get a grip on the game. Forced to drop deeper and didn&#8217;t look comfortable in a deeper than usual central midfield role.
Mason Greenwood: 6 &#8211; Sharp throughout. Tried to make things happen with long diagonal balls and a few surging runs. Surprisingly subbed out.
Bruno Fernandes: 6 &#8211; Not at his fluid best and hardly had a kick in the first half. Growing influence on the game, but then faded again. Villarreal did a job on him.
Marcus Rashford: 5 &#8211; Poor first half, like most United players. Missed a big chance in second half, but it was likely offside in the build up. His speculative shot led to Cavani&#8217;s goal. His first touch was off all night.
Edinson Cavani: 7 &#8211; Worked so hard to track back time and again, even if he didn&#8217;t time his tackles well. Typical predator in the box for the equalizer too. His movement is so good.

A match with just one save between the keepers saw a near-perfect sequence of penalty kicks decided when Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli saved David De Gea&#8217;s penalty after 120 minutes of play ended 1-1 in the 2021 Europa League Final in Gdansk, Poland.
Ten rounds of penalty kicks sent the keepers to the spot, where Rulli beat De Gea and then saved the Manchester United keeper&#8217;s penalty.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer again remains trophyless as Red Devils manager, while Unai Emery wins his fourth UEFA Cup and Villarreal collects its biggest trophy yet.
Gerard Moreno scored a 29th-minute goal and Edinson Cavani evened the score after halftime to push the match toward halftime.
United had the better of the ball for 90 minutes and the first period of extra time, but the match tilted toward Villarreal over the final 15 minutes before heading to penalties.

<h4>Three things we learned from the Europa League Final</h4>
1. Tight title fight: United might&#8217;ve had better than 60 percent possession in both halves but the path to goal was often blocked by defenders in both final thirds. Villarreal had four shots blocked by United, who stymied two bids from the Red Devils. Those six blocks over 90 minutes were double the amount of shots on target.
This match felt like it would be kept alive by two industrious midfield and won by a mistake or moment of greatness. United midfielder Scott McTominay was a force for United, even getting credit with an assist, while Dani Parejo struck a more stylish figured in the yellow of Villarreal.
2. Maguire absence looms (sort of): You look at Villarreal&#8217;s goal and think, &#8220;Would that have happened with Harry Maguire in the back?&#8221; That&#8217;s a fair one, as Victor Lindelof had a hold of Moreno&#8217;s jersey as the Spanish forward pushed him away, but Lindelof was also very steady with the ball in making over 100 passes in the match and center back mate Eric Bailly wasn&#8217;t bad, either.
This felt more about the lack of ideas from United, and young Mason Greenwood was poor at right wing while veteran presence Juan Mata and the entire bench waited into extra time without Solksjaer making a sub.

3. Missed chance for Marcus: Rashford was prepared to put the Red Devils in front when Bruno Fernandes swept a cross in from the right but the normally strong finisher totally flubbed a chance and it meandered wide of the far post. The 69th-minute chance was arguably as good a chance as any in the match.
4. Big day for Unai Emery: This was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer&#8217;s first big final, while Unai Emery had won three of his four Europa League finals and a pair of cup final wins from his time at Paris Saint-Germain as well. Solskjaer didn&#8217;t use a sub until extra time while Emery made five changes between the 60th and 88th minutes.
<h4>Man of the Match: Geronimo Rulli</h4>
Scott McTominay was very good and his assist might&#8217;ve been unintentional, but his motor was relentless and he made a big tackle in the 112th minute. That said, Rulli&#8217;s two saves were the difference.

Three things we learned as Villarreal beats Manchester United in UEL Final

Manchester United will cap off the 2020-21 season with a major trophy celebration — the club&#8217;s first in 48 months — if only they can beat Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday (start time, 3 pm ET) at the Municipal Stadium in Gdansk, Poland.

Despite finishing 2nd in the Premier League — undeniable improvement and progress in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era — the current major trophy drought at Old Trafford (2017 Europa League) is the longest endured by Manchester United fans since four trophy-less seasons from 1986 to 1990. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer delivered the Red Devils back to respectability, comfortable UEFA Champions League qualification and even a brief flirtation with Premier League title contention, but his current haul of zero managerial triumphs is nine trophies short of what he won in 11 seasons as a Manchester United player. The expectation to lift a piece of silverware is immense, but Solskjaer is uniquely qualified to understand that pressure and, perhaps on Wednesday, thrive under it.
As for Villarreal, Unai Emery, who took over last summer after the club finished 5th in La Liga, has done in his first season what he does best: guide Spanish clubs to the business end of the Europa League. Emery, of course, won back-to-back-to-back Europa League titles with Sevilla from 2014 to 2017. It was that achievement which, in part, landed him the Arsenal job following Arsene Wenger&#8217;s departure in 2018. This season, a 7th-place finish was only good enough for Europa Conference League qualification, though a win on Wednesday would boost Villarreal into next season&#8217;s Champions League instead. Gerardo Moreno, who bagged 23 goals in La Liga (plus another 6 in the Europa League), will be the main threat with which Manchester United&#8217;s center back duo — perhaps without injured captain Harry Maguire — must contend.
