Russia launched a special military operation to prevent Ukraine from becoming an “advanced bridgehead for aggression”; against its territory, the federation has confirmed.
Following Kyiv’s move to join NATO, among other reasons, Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, starting the deadliest war in Europe since Second World War II.
At a briefing in Moscow on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova declared that Ukraine had been “seized by the neo-Nazi regime.”;
Amid ceasefire negotiations initiated by the United States, Zakharova said the leadership of Russia has “repeatedly stated”; that the objectives of the operation in Ukraine “will be achieved.”;
“The anti-human ideology will be uprooted and no longer represent a threat,”; she noted. “This is a debt we owe to the generation of victors in the Great Patriotic War.”;
The official said Russia’s Victory Day on May 9 will be a celebration of the federation’s “most important and sacred holiday”;, praising former Soviet republics for defying daunting challenges.
Zakharova recalled how they defended the independence of their common state, defeated Nazism, and ensured the right to life and free development for descendants.
The spokeswoman noted that unlike countries of the Western Europe “overpowered by Nazis,”; the Soviet Union did not succumb to planned extermination during “a war of annihilation.”;
“Many decades after Nuremberg, this was never questioned. Now, we are forced to prove that it was genocide,”; she said.
The foreign ministry announced that foreign guests, including leaders from a number of “world majority countries,”; will attend the festivities in Moscow on Friday.
The dignitaries, according to Zakharova, share Russia’s principled assessments of the causes of World War II, its outcomes, and the role of the Soviet Union in defeating Nazi Germany and its allies.
President Vladimir Putin will deliver a speech during the Victory Parade where military formations from friendly countries will march across Red Square alongside Russian soldiers.
