In anticipation of the 2027 general election, a group from the Niger Delta, the Ijaw National Congress, West Africa Chapter, has urged President Bola Tinubu to reassign Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to the Ministry of the Niger Delta.

The Ijaw group submitted their request in a pre-action notice outlined in a letter addressed to President Tinubu, which was shared with journalists on Wednesday.

The letter, dated January 6, 2026, is signed by Rev. Dr. Perry Aperela, Chairman of the INC West African Chapter.

In the letter titled, ‘Pre-action notice requesting the redeployment/transfer of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, from the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to the Ministry of Niger Delta’, the group emphasized that the minister should be closer to Rivers State due to his ongoing campaign activities in the region in preparation for the 2027 election.

“This serves as a formal pre-action notice to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, requesting the redeployment/transfer of Nyesom Wike from the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to the Ministry of the Niger Delta.

“The rationale behind this request is that Nyesom Wike needs to be nearer to Rivers State because of his persistent campaigning activities leading up to the 2027 elections in Rivers State. He has been traveling from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to Rivers State every weekend lately, which clearly shows that his political engagements are primarily focused in the Niger Delta region.

“Given this situation, it is both logical and administratively sensible for him to be redeployed/transferred to the Ministry of the Niger Delta to align his ministerial duties with his political activities and regional proximity,” the letter stated.

Recently, the minister has engaged in several political meetings with various stakeholders in Rivers State, where he pledged his full support for President Tinubu amidst renewed tensions with the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Wike's purported opposition to Fubara's bid for a second term has sparked a confrontation between him and the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, who suggested that Wike should resign from his ministerial role to focus on the politics of Rivers State.

Wike cautioned Basiru against meddling in Rivers politics, emphasizing that he could face serious consequences if he continues.
