The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YBSIEC) has announced that elections will take place across the state's 17 local government areas on Saturday, June 6, 2026.

This announcement was made on Wednesday in Damaturu by Mohammed Nguru, Permanent Member I of YBSIEC, during a stakeholders' meeting that included security agencies, political party representatives from the Inter-Party Advisory Council, and members of the media.

Nguru mentioned that the timetable has been approved by Governor Mai Mala Buni and emphasized that these elections aim to bolster grassroots democracy.

“This stakeholders' meeting is vital for the success of the upcoming elections,” he stated.

“Conducting a credible election necessitates collaboration and shared responsibility among all stakeholders.”

He further added that the Commission is in the process of finalizing comprehensive election guidelines for political parties, which will detail the procedures, timelines, and requirements.

“We urge political parties to carefully review the guidelines and comply fully to ensure a smooth and orderly electoral process,” Nguru remarked.

Nguru also encouraged parties to nominate strong candidates, highlighting the significance of quality leadership at the local government level:

“Political parties should present candidates who possess quality, reputation, and substance. The type of leadership we cultivate locally will directly influence service delivery, accountability, and community development.”

On the subject of eligibility, Nguru clarified: “Chairmanship candidates must be at least 30 years old, while councillorship candidates should be a minimum of 25 years old.

“All positions are available to eligible residents without any gender discrimination.

“Candidates must be of sound mind, not bankrupt, bona fide residents, and hold at least a school certificate or its equivalent.

“All aspirants will undergo mandatory security screening.”

Nomination fees are set at N300,000 for chairmanship, N250,000 for vice-chairmanship, and N200,000 for councillorship positions.

“The Commission will assume full responsibility for organizing and supervising the elections and assures the people of Yobe State that the process will be free, fair, credible, and peaceful,” Nguru affirmed.
