The Plateau State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar for his remarks regarding President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to the state.

The party asserted that Atiku does not have the standing to speak on behalf of the state's residents.

This was expressed in a statement by the Acting Publicity Secretary of the party, Shittu Bamaiyi, on Monday in Jos.

The statement characterized Atiku’s criticism as politically motivated and “uninformed.”

According to DAILY POST, Tinubu attended the funeral service for Mama Lydia over the weekend at the Church of Christ in Nations headquarters in Jos, the capital of Plateau State.

During the service, the President delivered a speech advocating for unity, peace, and tolerance, urging the community to “avoid religious and ethnic divisions” and to live together harmoniously.

In a statement released on Saturday, Atiku denounced Tinubu’s choice to visit Plateau— one of the regions most affected by violent attacks— calling it “a sad reflection of priorities and a mockery of leadership.”

He claimed that the president’s decision to attend the event “under the auspices of his party’s national chairman” demonstrated a lack of empathy and compassion.

The former Vice-President contended that Tinubu should have visited to express condolences to the victims of ongoing violence and displacement in the area.

However, the Plateau APC argued that Atiku’s criticism overlooked the responsibilities of state governors in ensuring security and the support that the President has provided to local security initiatives.

The party stated that Atiku’s remarks amounted to exploiting tragedy for “political gain.”

“By all measures and definitions, Alhaji Atiku is considered one of the nation’s statesmen, in addition to embodying the characteristics of a notorious opposition leader within Nigeria’s political arena.

“Based on the content of his statement and his stance regarding the insurgency in Plateau, it would not be inappropriate to assert that Alhaji Atiku spoke in bad faith and from a poorly informed perspective,” it concluded.
