The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced a postponement of the screening process for its 2025 Elective National Convention, which was initially scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
In a statement released on Monday by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, the party indicated that the delay was due to “unforeseen circumstances.”
Fintiri mentioned that a new date for the screening would be announced shortly and expressed regret for any inconvenience the postponement may have caused to all aspirants and party members.
“A new date will be communicated once it is established. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement,” he stated.
“All aspirants and members of our Party should take note of this and act accordingly,” the statement continued.
He also reaffirmed the committee’s dedication to ensuring a transparent, credible, and efficient national convention.
The PDP’s 2025 Elective National Convention was previously set for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
On October 25, 2025, the PDP had announced a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee tasked with vetting aspirants for various national positions ahead of the convention.
This committee, led by former Ondo State governorship candidate and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, was expected to carry out the screening on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
The postponement was declared shortly after former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, announced his intention to run for the position of national chairman.
This situation arose amid earlier reports that northern PDP leaders had backed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as their consensus candidate for the chairmanship position.
However, several factions within the party, including those loyal to Lamido and another prominent leader, Nyesom Wike, opposed Turaki’s endorsement, citing insufficient consultation.
The discord highlights the increasing tensions within the party, which has recently experienced notable resignations among its members.
