Nvidia has launched its Open Agent Safety Platform, a software-to-silicon security approach designed to help organisations put stronger boundaries around autonomous AI agents.

The platform combines OpenShell, an open-source secure runtime for controlling how agents execute tasks, with Sentry, a reference system design that uses Nvidia BlueField-4 DPUs to monitor agent behaviour from outside the main agent environment.

Why agent safety needs infrastructure controls

As agents gain access to files, tools, networks and enterprise systems, traditional application permissions are no longer the whole security story. Long-running agents may act across several systems, so organisations need controls that remain enforceable even when the model or agent harness behaves unexpectedly.

What OpenShell does

OpenShell creates a secure runtime boundary around an agent. Nvidia says it can constrain access to resources and enforce policy independently of the model. The software is open source and can also be extended to third-party compute platforms.

What Sentry adds

Sentry is an out-of-band watchdog in Nvidia's reference design. Running on BlueField-4 DPUs, it can continuously observe behaviour and quarantine an agent that crosses its software boundary. The design separates the monitor from the workload it supervises.

What organisations should still do

The platform does not remove the need for identity controls, least privilege, secure tool design, approval steps, audit logs and incident response. Security teams should document every system an agent can reach and add human confirmation around high-impact actions such as payments, production changes or sensitive exports.

Availability

Nvidia says OpenShell is broadly available as open-source software. Sentry is presented as part of the Open Agent Safety Platform reference system design.

Bottom line

The announcement reflects a broader shift: AI-agent safety is becoming an infrastructure problem as well as a model problem. The more autonomy organisations grant to agents, the more important independent and enforceable boundaries become.
