Prince Adewole Adebayo, the former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), asserts that no resident of the Niger Delta should experience poverty, given the region's wealth of natural and human resources.

Adebayo made this statement on Friday in Abuja during the public launch of “Hidden Treasures: An Exposition on the Rich Resources and Opportunities of the Niger Delta,” a new book written by Chris Iyovwaye.

He characterized the Niger Delta as one of Nigeria's wealthiest yet most underutilized areas, stating that years of ineffective leadership have hindered its development. He emphasized that the region's prosperity can only be unlocked through intentional efforts, remarking that “every treasure requires digging.”

Adebayo identified three essential drivers for tapping into the region's potential: personal initiative, community engagement, and government support. He believes that the Niger Delta possesses enough wealth to contribute significantly to national development and even exceed the economic capabilities of many developed countries. He cautioned against superficial management of national resources, highlighting that the people are the region's greatest asset.

The event's chairman, Maj.-Gen. Ike Nwachukwu (retd), stated that Nigeria should embrace restructuring, arguing that each region has the resources necessary for sustainable development. He encouraged citizens to continue supporting the Armed Forces in their mission to uphold peace and security throughout the nation.

Human rights lawyer Prof. Mike Ozekhome, represented by Prof. Ezekiel Abalagba, described the book as a practical guide for revitalizing crucial sectors in the Niger Delta. He advocated for transparent leadership, enhanced infrastructure, and increased economic diversification into agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing, petrochemicals, technology, and environmental restoration.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Mike Ogiadome, reiterated the Niger Delta's importance as Nigeria's economic powerhouse and stressed the necessity for long-term investment, including the creation of a deep-sea port to draw global investors. He recommended the book as an essential resource for policymakers and development partners.

Author Chris Iyovwaye stated that the book seeks to dispel long-held misconceptions by offering clear insights into the region's wealth, challenges, and pathways to sustainable development.
