The family of Nnamdi Kanu has expressed serious concerns regarding an alleged scheme by the Nigerian Government and South-East political leaders to assassinate the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) while he is incarcerated in Sokoto Prison.

According to DAILY POST, Kanu was transferred to Sokoto Prison on Friday.

On Thursday, Kanu was convicted of terrorism and sentenced to life imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja, which was overseen by Justice James Omotosho, following a trial that spanned nearly a decade.

Throughout the trial, the IPOB leader had been held in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). However, the judge ordered his transfer to prison during the sentencing.

Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, who spoke on behalf of the family, raised the alarm about the alleged assassination plot on Friday.

Confirming the IPOB leader’s relocation to Sokoto Prison, Prince Emmanuel voiced his deep worries, alleging that the Nigerian Government and South-East political leaders plan to carry out an assassination in that facility.

“Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been moved to Sokoto Prison. This is where the government led by President Bola Tinubu and South-East political leaders intend to complete their mission by assassinating him,” Prince Emmanuel stated.

He asserted that the government's decision to transfer Kanu to Sokoto was intended to make it more challenging for family members to visit him.

Prince Emmanuel lamented that it would be easier for the government and its “collaborators” to harm Nnamdi Kanu in such a “remote location.”

He also raised concerns that “insurgents” could target the IPOB leader within the Sokoto prison.

“We urge Nigerians and the international community to be aware that the relocation of Nnamdi Kanu to Sokoto Prison is designed to facilitate a plot to assassinate him in this isolated facility,” Prince Emmanuel added.

Reactions have continued to emerge following Kanu’s conviction and sentencing.

His legal team has pledged to appeal the decision.

IPOB, along with a coalition of rights activists, including the American Veterans of Igbo Descent, Ambassadors for Self Determination, and the Rising Sun Foundation, have joined in the call.

DAILY POST reports that numerous stakeholders from the South-East, including activists, religious and traditional leaders, as well as political officeholders, are advocating for a political resolution to Kanu’s situation.
