A faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has announced that it will challenge the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court ruling that affirmed Dr. Agbo Major as the party’s authentic national chairman.

Factional NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, describing the judgment as a “miscarriage of justice” and “an assault on democracy”.

Johnson argued that the FCT High Court’s decision amounted to overstepping its jurisdiction, effectively sitting on an appeal of a matter already before the Abia State High Court and the Court of Appeal in Owerri.

He said: “This act flies in the face of established legal hierarchy and the doctrine of stare decisis. A group of expelled members, acting on behalf of Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, approached the FCT High Court seeking a judicial review of a matter already under consideration by the appellate court.

“Their actions clearly disregard the rule of sub judice and appear aimed at destabilising a viable opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections.”

Johnson further criticised the court for ignoring procedural irregularities, noting that NNPP was never properly served with the court processes.

He said this failure undermined the principle of fair hearing and raised concerns about procedural integrity.

He warned that the judgment could erode public and international confidence in Nigeria’s judiciary at a critical time for the nation’s democratic progress.

Reassuring party members and Nigerians, Johnson said, “This is merely a temporary detour orchestrated by those who fear the people’s will. We are taking all necessary legal steps to appeal this miscarriage of justice.

“We are confident that the appellate court will correct this anomaly and uphold the rule of law. The attempt to hijack this party will fail Nigeria’s democracy is bigger than the desperation of a few.”
