The National Chairman of the NNPP, Agbo Major, has rejected assertions that the party may select President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its candidate for the 2027 elections.
He stated that the party has not made any such decision.
This statement comes in light of the current trend of defections from major opposition parties to the APC.
In an interview with DAILY POST, Agbo Major elaborated: “There are two distinct issues here: individuals within the party who may be considering the APC, and the party itself as an organization."
“Let me clarify regarding the party. It is not uncommon for parties to seek collaboration for the sake of national stability. What is crucial is the preservation of our democracy. However, I can assure you that the NNPP has not made any decision to adopt or align with President Tinubu or the APC.”
He noted that some former members, particularly Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who have been expelled from the party, are leaning towards the APC, but they are acting independently and not representing the NNPP.
Regarding the potential for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State to join the APC, Agbo Major commented: “His situation is quite unique. He joined the NNPP through Kwankwaso’s movement and was granted the party’s ticket. By God’s grace, he won. However, since taking office, he has been under significant influence from Kwankwaso, who controls his every decision from Abuja.
“The governor has been politically constrained and unable to govern the people of Kano State effectively. If his decision to leave the NNPP is to liberate himself from that constraint and serve his constituents better, then it is understandable. His circumstances differ from those of the governors in Bayelsa or Enugu. So, if he ultimately decides to join the APC, we will not hold it against him. What is important is that he can serve his people effectively.”
When asked if Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf could work together in the APC, Agbo Major replied: “That’s a very pertinent question. I am not aware of any discussions they may be having, but I can tell you that it would be quite challenging for both individuals to collaborate under one roof again, unless the governor chooses to completely submit himself. Kwankwaso is known to be very domineering. In his political movement, total subservience to him is expected.”
