The museum disclosed that it possesses a 17th-century portrait in its collection that bears a striking resemblance to Robert De Niro.
Created in 1628 by Bartholomaus Strobel the Younger, the artwork is titled Portrait of Johann Vogt.
It portrays a Wroclaw official and landowner, depicted in bust against a dark background, gazing intently at the viewer.
Observers have noted the uncanny similarity to the Oscar-winning actor, even down to the moles on his cheek.
This resemblance has garnered increasing attention on social media, prompting the museum to showcase the painting on its website.
“The canvas depicts a mature man with a mustache and a distinctive pointed beard, shown in bust against a dark background, staring intently at the viewer.
“Interestingly, the facial features of the sitter resemble those of contemporary American film actor Robert De Niro.
“The similarity is remarkable,” the museum stated.
Strobel, born in Wroclaw in 1591, trained in Prague under Emperor Rudolf II before working in cities such as Gdansk, Elbląg, and Torun.
His most renowned works, “The Feast of Herod” and the “Beheading of St John the Baptist,” are currently housed in Madrid’s Museo del Prado.
The museum reiterated its invitation after reports emerged that De Niro was in Poland, posting: “Robert De Niro in Poland! During his visit, will he come to Wroclaw to view the portrait of his ‘ancestor’ displayed in our museum?”
The actor is reported to have arrived last week, making stops in Warsaw and Krakow, where his Nobu hospitality group has investments.
A Nobu hotel and restaurant opened in Warsaw in 2020.
Additional luxury projects are also in development in Krakow.
According to the museum, De Niro left the country without making a visit, despite earlier attempts to reach him in 2017 through his agent.
The portrait remains on display on the first floor of the National Museum in Wroclaw.
Earlier in March, fans of The One Show were astonished when De Niro appeared.
He was there to promote his new gangster crime thriller movie, The Alto Knights.
However, some viewers felt disappointed as the star appeared disinterested.
One fan remarked: “Robert De Niro’s just waiting to go home.”
