A HERO mum leapt into a river to save her 7-year-old son’s life before both tragically died after struggling in the water’s strong currents, a witness said.

Cops and emergency services were scrambled to the scene at , just before 4.30pm on Saturday.

Emergency crews received reports that a boy and a woman were struggling in the water of the nearby River Brent.

Both the heroic mum, 34, and her son were pulled from the water by emergency services and treated at the scene.

Tragically, despite the best efforts of medics, both were pronounced dead a short while later.

A witness to the tragedy has since described how the awful event unfolded.

They explained how the to save her son after seeing him get into difficulty in the river.

Speaking to The Sun the witness said: “In a matter of seconds he had run away from his mum and had jumped into the water.

“He looked hot and jumped in.

“His mum then followed him and they were struggling as the currents were too strong. The water is very deep.”

“The mum was holding onto her son.”

The witness said another person then jumped in after them to try and pull them to shore but also struggled in the current and had to let go.

The horrified witness said the harrowing ordeal was over within 10 minutes.

An initial into the tragedy revealed that the circumstances surrounding the deaths are “not suspicious”.

The said investigating officers have established the incident was “a tragic accident”.

In a statement the force previously said: “Further enquiries carried out by officers into the incident have established it was a tragic accident and the deaths of the woman and child who very sadly lost their lives are being treated as non-suspicious.

“We can confirm they are a mother and son, aged 34 and seven years.

“This is understandably an incredibly difficult time for their family and they have requested that their privacy be respected.”

The force thanked emergency crews and members of the public for doing their “very best” in an “incredibly challenging situation”.

Detective Superintendent Pete Thackray, from the Met’s West Area Command Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a . Our thoughts are with their loved ones.

“I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the first responders, and members of the public, who did their very best in an incredibly challenging situation.”
