The victim, a tourist from California, was changing her child's diaper around 3 PM on Thursday when the deranged woman allegedly burst into the stall on the seventh floor and stabbed her multiple times.
During the brutal attack, the baby fell from the changing table onto the floor, according to prosecutors.
Authorities report that the 38-year-old mother sustained stab wounds to her back and slashes to her arm, and she was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
The baby was unharmed during the knife attack.
Kerri Aherne was apprehended after being restrained by the baby's father and store security personnel.
The 43-year-old had been released from the Manhattan Psychiatric Center earlier that same morning after spending a year there.
“She had purchased a knife at Macy’s and was looking for someone to kill because voices in her head instructed her to kill someone or she would be killed,” Paul Barker, the Manhattan Assistant District Attorney, stated in court on Friday.
Aherne faces charges of attempted murder, endangering the welfare of a child, two counts of assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
She reportedly bought the knife at Macy’s just moments before the attack.
