<a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/amy-cooper" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Amy Cooper</a>, the white woman who falsely told police that a Black birdwatcher was threatening her life, is now suing the employer that fired her over the incident, claiming she was a victim of racial discrimination.
Cooper faced sweeping backlash last year over a video of her confrontation with <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/christian-cooper" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Christian Cooper</a>, who is not related to her. The video, which was shot by Christian Cooper, shows him calmly asking Amy to leash her dog in the park. Amy responds by threatening to tell the police that &#8220;there is an African-American man threatening my life.&#8221; She then follows through and makes the frantic report.

The video went viral and Cooper was widely denounced as <a href="https://twitter.com/NYCMayor/status/1265265665755230209?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">racist</a> at the time, with many dubbing her the Central Park &#8220;<a href="https://globalnews.ca/news/6986111/central-park-karen-amy-cooper-dog/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Karen</a>&#8221; — a slang term for privileged white women who raise trivial issues with the authorities.
Her employer, Franklin Templeton, fired her from her job as a portfolio manager that same day. &#8220;We do not tolerate racism of any kind at Franklin Templeton,&#8221; the company <a href="https://twitter.com/FTI_US/status/1265348185201008641?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">said</a> at the time.
Cooper filed a criminal complaint against Franklin Templeton in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday, claiming that her employer fired her without investigating the incident. She also claimed that Franklin Templeton falsely portrayed her as racist, and that Christian Cooper was an &#8220;overzealous birdwatcher&#8221; who had selected her as a &#8220;target.&#8221;
&#8220;She did these things because she was alone in the park and frightened to death,&#8221; the lawsuit claims.
She is seeking unspecified damages for race and gender discrimination, defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence.

Franklin Templeton stood by its decision to fire Cooper in a statement to the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/26/nyregion/amy-cooper-suing-racial-discrimination.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">New York Times</a>.
“We believe the circumstances of the situation speak for themselves and that the company responded appropriately,” a spokesperson for the investment firm said. “We will defend against these baseless claims.”
The viral encounter happened on May 25, 2020, the same day that police officer Derek Chauvin killed <a href="https://globalnews.ca/tag/george-floyd" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">George Floyd</a> by kneeling on his neck for nine minutes in Minneapolis, Minn.
Amy Cooper lost her job and surrendered her dog amid the backlash over her behaviour in the park. She later apologized in a statement.
“I reacted emotionally and made false assumptions about his intentions when, in fact, I was the one who was acting inappropriately by not having my dog on a leash,” she said in her apology.
Amy Cooper initially faced charges for making a false police report, but Christian Cooper accepted her apology and opted not to participate in the investigation. Manhattan prosecutors ultimately dropped their case against her after she completed a series of counselling sessions about racial justice.

“I think it’s a first step,&#8221; Christian Cooper <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/tag/story target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">said</a> after she issued her original apology. &#8220;I think she’s gotta do some reflection on what happened because up until the moment when she made that statement … it was just a conflict between a birder and a dog walker, and then she took it to a very dark place. I think she’s gotta sort of examine why and how that happened.”
Christian Cooper, who is a biomedical editor and former Marvel Comics writer, also encouraged people not to judge Amy based on a few seconds of racism and &#8220;very poor judgement.&#8221;
&#8220;Only she can tell us if that defines her entire life by what she does going forward,&#8221; he said.
Christian Cooper declined to comment on Amy&#8217;s lawsuit, which was filed one year to the day after their encounter went viral.

Zocdoc says it has fixed a bug that allowed current and former staff at doctor&#8217;s offices and dental practices to access patient data because their user accounts weren&#8217;t properly decommissioned.
The New York-based company revealed the issue <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/20787225-zocdoc-security-incident?20787225" target="_blank">in a letter</a> to the California attorney general&#8217;s office, which requires companies with more than 500 residents of the state affected by a security lapse or breach to disclose the incident.
Zocdoc, which lets prospective patients book appointments with doctors and dentists, said that it gives each medical or dental practice usernames and passwords for its staff to access appointments made through Zocdoc, but that &#8220;programming errors&#8221; — essentially a software bug in Zocdoc&#8217;s own systems — &#8220;allowed some past or current practice staff members to access the provider portal after their usernames and passwords were intended to be removed, deleted or otherwise limited.&#8221;
The letter confirmed that patient data stored in Zocdoc&#8217;s portal could have been accessed, including a patient&#8217;s name, email address, phone number, and the times and dates of their appointments, but also other data that may have been shared with the practice — such as insurance details, Social Security numbers, and details of the patient&#8217;s medical history.
But Zocdoc said payment card numbers, radiological or diagnostic reports, and medical records were not taken, since it does not store this data.
In an email, Zocdoc spokesperson Sandra Glading said that the company discovered the bug in August 2020, but &#8220;due to the complexity of the code, it took a significant amount of investigation to determine which, if any, practices and users were affected and how.&#8221; The company said it provided notice to the California&#8217;s attorney general&#8217;s office &#8220;as soon as was practicable.&#8221;
Zocdoc said it has &#8220;detailed logs that can detect exploitation of any data, including any potential exploitation of this vulnerability,&#8221; and that after a review of those logs and other investigative work, &#8220;we have no indication, at this time, that any personal information was misused in any way.&#8221;
Around six million users access Zocdoc a month, the company said.
If this incident sounds vaguely familiar, it&#8217;s because this was a near-identical security issue to one Zocdoc reported in 2016. A <a href="https://www.databreaches.net/patient-appointment-booking-service-notifying-patients-of-potential-breach/" target="_blank">letter filed the time</a> cited similar &#8220;programming errors&#8221; that allowed staff at medical providers to improperly access to patient data.

Zocdoc says ‘programming errors’ exposed access to patients’ data

In February, Nigerian fintech startup <a href="https://mono.co/" target="_blank">Mono</a> announced its acceptance into Y Combinator and, at the time, it wanted to build the Plaid for Africa. Three months later, the startup has a different mission: to power the internet economy in Africa and has closed $2 million in seed investment towards that goal.
The investment comes nine months after the company raised $500,000 in pre-seed last September and two months after receiving $125,000 from YC. Mono&#8217;s total investment moves up to $2.625 million, and investors in this new round include Entrée Capital (one of the investors in Kuda&#8217;s seed round), Kuda co-founder and CEO Babs Ogundeyi; Gbenga Oyebode, partner at TCVP; and Eric Idiahi, co-founder and partner at Verod Capital. New York but Africa-based VC Lateral Capital also invested after taking part in Mono&#8217;s pre-seed.
In a region where more than half of the population is<a href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.POP.TOTL?locations=ZG" target="_blank"> either unbanked or underbanked</a>, open finance players like Mono are trying to improve financial inclusion and connectivity on the continent. Open finance thrives on the notion that access to a financial ecosystem via open APIs and new routes to move money, access financial information and make borrowing decisions reduces the barriers and costs of entry for the underbanked. 
Launched in August 2020, the company streamlines various financial data in a single API for companies and third-party developers. Mono allows them to retrieve information like account statements, real-time balance, historical transactions, income, expense and account owner identification with users&#8217; consent.

When we covered the company early in the year, it had already secured partnerships with more than 16 financial institutions in Nigeria. In addition to having a little over a hundred businesses like Carbon, Aella Credit, Credpal, Renmoney, Autochek, and Inflow Finance access customers bank account for bank statements, identity data, and balances, Mono has also connected over 100,000 financial accounts for its partners and analysed over 66 million financial transactions so far.
Mono has done impressively well in a short period. While it appears to have figured out product-market fit, CEO <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/ijbkid/" target="_blank">Abdul Hassan</a> is quick to remind everyone that the burgeoning API fintech space is just an entry point to its pursuit of being a data company &#8212; a case he also made in February.
&#8220;The way I see it, our market is not that big. Compare the payments market now with 2016, when Paystack and Flutterwave just started. The payments space in 2016 was very small and the number of people using cards online was very small,&#8221; said Hassan, who co-founded the company with <a href="https://in.linkedin.com/in/whoisprakhar" target="_blank">Prakhar Singh</a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s the same thing for us right now. That&#8217;s why our focus isn&#8217;t only on open banking but data. We&#8217;re thinking of how we can power the internet economy with data that isn&#8217;t necessarily financial data. For instance, think about open data for telcos. Imagine where you can move your data from one telco to another instead of getting a new SIM card and making a fresh registration. That&#8217;s where I see the market going, at least for us at Mono.&#8221;

He adds that the company is taking an approach of building a product one step at a time until it can fully diversify from financial data offerings, including connecting with payment gateways (Paystack and Flutterwave) and other fintechs like wealth management startups Piggyvest and Cowrywise.
&#8220;When you&#8217;re able to connect to all the systems, a lot of use cases will come up. The first step is how can we connect to all available data and open it up for businesses and developers,&#8221; he continued.
Therefore, Mono will use the funding to reinforce its current financial and identity data offerings and launch new products for diverse business verticals. Also, a long-overdue pan-African expansion to Ghana and Kenya is top priority. The last time I spoke with Hassan, the end of Q1 looked feasible to get into at least one of the two markets but it didn&#8217;t turn out that way. But the wait seems to be over as the company said it&#8217;d be going live in Ghana next month with a handful of existing customers from Nigeria and new ones in Ghana. Some of these partners include five banks (GTBank, Fidelity Bank and three unannounced banks) and the mobile money service arm of MTN Ghana.
&#8220;Our expansion is mostly inspired by our customers looking to expand to other markets, same with some of our products. We work with our customers to give them the right tools to build new experiences for their customers,&#8221; Hassan stated.

Mono is one of the three API fintech companies to have raised a seed investment this year. Last month, another Nigerian fintech Okra <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/nigerian-fintech-okra-raises-3-5m-backed-by-accenture-ventures-and-susa-ventures" target="_blank">closed $3.5 million</a> while Stitch, a South African API fintech, launched<a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/stitch-emerges-from-stealth-with-4m-for-its-api-fintech-play-in-africa" target="_blank"> with $4 million</a> in February. Back to back investments like this show that investors are incredibly optimistic about the market. Avil Eyal, managing partner and co-founder of Entrée Capital, one of such investors, had this to say.
&#8220;We are very excited to be working with Abdul, Prakhar and the entire Mono team as they continue to build out the rails for African banking to enable the delivery of financial services to hundreds of millions of people across the African continent.&#8221;

Nigeria’s Mono raises millions to power the internet economy in Africa

When the <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/covid-19" target="_blank">COVID-19</a> pandemic hit, a Canadian bride and her American husband had no choice but to shelve their original <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/wedding" target="_blank">wedding</a> plans — instead, they were married in a quaint ceremony straddling the border, surrounded by family on either side and under the watchful eyes of border guards.
Davina Finn and David Hecht were supposed to have their big day in her hometown of Ottawa last year in the presence of hundreds of loved ones from both countries.
But after two months of closures and the health crisis surging, the pair who met in New York decided they needed to find another option so that their parents and siblings could be with them for their wedding.
&#8220;If you told me two years ago this was our plan I would have thought you were crazy,&#8221; Hecht said, adding that he wouldn&#8217;t change a thing.
The couple took to scouting potential locations where their immediate families could be present at a safe distance. They were looking at border crossings on Google Maps but most of them are on bridges or places where they couldn&#8217;t stand on either side. That&#8217;s when Finn&#8217;s brother suggested the small Quebec town of Stanstead that sits across from Vermont.
&#8220;It&#8217;s only separated by flower pots, a line of caution tape and some rocks,&#8221; Finn said. &#8220;It&#8217;s as if you&#8217;re in the same space &#8230; just over a garden.&#8221;
&#8220;It was as perfect as perfect could be under the circumstances.&#8221;

Finn and Hecht were only able to visit the day before their wedding. They had to contact border authorities, too, to tell them that they had a small ceremony planned but with COVID-19 restrictions in mind. There would be no crossing country lines to hug her family and each side brought their own picnic.

The event was small, with only their siblings, parents, a close friend officiating the ceremony and photographers taking part.
<a href="https://www.unioneleven.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Union Eleven</a> Photographers&#8217; Andrew Geddes said he wouldn&#8217;t have thought it was possible to have a wedding straddling two countries in the midst of a pandemic.

With Stanstead located three hours away from their office in Ottawa, Geddes and his team weren&#8217;t even able to scout out the location as part of their usual preparation. Aside from capturing the big day with photos, they were also tasked with livestreaming it for the couple&#8217;s extended families and friends that couldn&#8217;t be there.
&#8220;We were surrounded by everyone we would have wanted to be there,&#8221; Finn said of the added livestream.
Geddes admits he was a bit nervous. Union Eleven Photographers has photographed more than 500 weddings, but nothing like this. Border patrol was relaxed and easygoing and the ceremony itself was &#8220;fun, different and exciting.&#8221;
&#8220;Everyone was so happy and it was a beautiful day,&#8221; Geddes said.
They made it as fun as it could possibly be despite pandemic restrictions, according to Finn. She described it as a &#8220;happy, perfect day&#8221; — there was even music for everyone to dance to on either side of the border.
&#8220;We were just so excited to make it happen,&#8221; she said, adding that it also gave her the chance to see her parents and brother since the pandemic started.

Finn and Hecht, who have been married for a little more than six months now, relocated to Washington, D.C. after their wedding. They both work from home due to COVID-19, which has brought them closer in what Hecht described as a &#8220;silver lining&#8221; of the pandemic.
&#8220;Married life is great,&#8221; Hecht said.
The pair also has no intention of holding a second ceremony or wedding reception as restrictions loosen and cases drop in Canada and the United States.
The September 2020 nuptials at a border crossing wasn&#8217;t the plan, but they are delighted with how it turned out. They also consider themselves lucky given the circumstances.

A COVID-19 love story: Meet a Canadian bride and her U.S. husband who got married at the border

<a href="https://whitestarcapital.com/" target="_blank">White Star Capital</a>, better known as a VC which, in its time, has backed the likes of Digg, launchrock, Meero, Summly, and Tier, among others, is moving into the hot world of crypto and blockchain with a new $50M Digital Asset Fund.
The special-vehicle fund will specialize in investing in crypto-networks and blockchain-enabled businesses and was previously going to be $30 million before raising more backing. Both Bpifrance and Ubisoft are among those institutions backing the new fund.
The fund will be run by New York-based General Partner Sep Alavi and supported by Principals Thomas Klocanas in New York and Sanjay Zimmerman in Toronto. The will deploy between $500,000 and $3.0 million in initial investments into 15-20 companies with a focus on North America and Europe.
Alavi said: “We are hyper-focused on this space and we expect to see further innovative use cases such as crypto credit, DeFi, NFTs, metaverses and more manifesting at an accelerated pace… With this fund, We are actively investing in crypto protocols, infrastructure, privacy, financial, gaming, and social use cases.”
The fund has already made six investments including; dfuse, Multis, Paraswap, Rally, Safello, a European crypto brokerage that went public on the Nasdaq First North stock exchange on May 12, and Ledn, a global digital asset savings, and credit platform.
Yoann Caujolle, managing director of Bpifrance said: &#8220;It’s critical that emerging crypto and blockchain-enabled startups receive investment from firms and professionals who have the experience and knowledge to help drive their businesses forward,” said “We’re pleased to partner with the Digital Asset Fund team for bringing their support and vision into the French and European blockchain and digital asset ecosystem.”
Over a call, Alavi told me: “White Star is investing across three funds, obviously our fund one, fund two, and in this new specialized Digital Asset Fund. Historically we&#8217;ve invested in enterprise and consumer businesses, we’ve not done any, any blockchain, but for two years ago we&#8217;ve been looking at this sector. And we believe that this merits its own dedicated vehicle. I&#8217;ve been personally been investing in blockchain the blockchain ecosystem since 2015 and bring your five-plus years of domain expertise and then I was able to build a team around this new fund.&#8221;
&#8220;We are, we&#8217;re looking at the three main verticals in this sector. The protocol layer, the infrastructure layer, and the application layer. That&#8217;s the kind of high-level thesis. The protocol layer is where we invest in tokens, because it’s important to mention that the fund will also hold tokens as investments as well as equity. On top of that, we&#8217;re pretty much agnostic and opportunistic. We see great use cases in decentralized finance. We see some great use cases in the NFT space and have made investments there as well. As long as we&#8217;re true to those three verticals that I mentioned, we will capture great value there.”

A New York state civil investigation into former U.S. President <a href="http://globalnews.ca/tag/Donald-Trump" target="_blank">Donald Trump&#8217;s</a> business dealings has now expanded into a criminal investigation, the state&#8217;s attorney general confirmed Tuesday.
&#8220;We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the organization is no longer purely civil in nature,&#8221; a spokesperson for the New York Attorney General&#8217;s office said in a statement to Global News.
&#8220;We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA.&#8221;

There&#8217;s been a shot across the boss of Gregg Berhalter&#8217;s USMNT &#8212; let alone the New York Red Bulls &#8212; as fiery leader Aaron Long is set for a lengthy absence <a href="https://mlsmultiplex.com/2021/05/17/aaron-long-suffers-ruptured-achilles-tendon/" target="_blank">after tearing an Achilles tendon</a> against Philadelphia on Saturday.
<a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/category/aaron-long" target="_blank">The 28-year-old Long</a>, oft-linked with a move abroad, has played 140 times for the Red Bulls and has 21 caps for the United States men&#8217;s national team.
Long had captained the USMNT in three of his last five caps and his loss to the Yanks for the Gold Cup is similar to that of the Red Bulls.

Are there replacement-level players who can fill his role in terms of tackles? Yup. Are there those who can orchestrate a back line as efficiently as Long? For sure. In fact, there will be a number of players who can upgrade the team in terms of ball movement.
But Long has that fire, pride, and &#8212; for lack of a better term &#8212; competitive gumption can be terribly difficult to find in a team or program. And that stings quite a bit.
Also, that mullet was pretty remarkable, wasn&#8217;t it?

Eric Adams, a leading New York City Mayoral candidate, has assured the Nigerian community of a place in his government if elected the mayor in November.
Adams gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in New York on the sidelines of a debate convened by The Nigerian Forum.
The forum is a coalition of the Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians and the Nigerian-Americans Public Affairs Committee, a political action committee.
“You are going to see yourselves in my government. It is time to tear down those barriers and walls that prevent you from being decision-makers.
“We’re going to empower your non-profits so that outsiders wouldn’t come in your communities and deliver services.
“You know what your communities need. I’m going to empower you with resources so that you can provide the services that are needed.

Adams, who is contesting on the platform of the Democratic Party, said he had been to Lagos and other parts of Africa helping the people.
According to him, he knows exactly how it feels to be a Nigerian or an African living in the U.S.

The New York City mayoral election is very competitive and strategic due to the city’s diverse nature and an annual budget of about US$100 billion, the largest municipal budget in the U.S.
No fewer than 13 Democratic and two Republican candidates have qualified for the city’s 2021 mayoral election following Democratic and Republican primaries on June 22, 2021, and a general election on Nov. 2, 2021.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that no fewer than three Nigerians are contesting in the city council’s elections.
They are Prof. Ranti Ogunleye, contesting for Staten Island City 49; Dr George Onuorah, contesting for Queens district 21; and Chris Durosinmi, contesting for Brooklyn District 37.
The Nigerian community is therefore positioning itself as an organised and important voting bloc that has enough weight to pull support for a candidate whose agenda resonates with the community.

The Knicks want to keep <a class="nameLink" href="https://www.nbcsports.com/edge/basketball/nba/player/30044/julius-randle" target="_blank" target="_blank">Julius Randle</a>.
Julius Randle wants to stay with the Knicks.
New York&#8217;s breakout star has said that before but <a href="https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9wb2RjYXN0Lmdsb2JhbC5jb20vc2hvdy80NDQ1MTQwL2VwaXNvZGVzL2ZlZWQ/episode/dm5pZDovL2VwaXNvZGVzLzQ0NzY3ODI5P21lZGlhX2lkPTMyOTkyNTg0" target="_blank" rel="noopener" target="_blank">confirmed that on The Victory podcast</a> this week (<a href="https://sny.tv/articles/knicks-julius-randle-career-reveal" target="_blank">hat tip Coby Green at SNY.tv</a>).

The only question now is how much it will cost for the Knicks to keep him.
Randle made a huge leap this year — he is about to win Most Improved Player and may make an All-NBA team after averaging 24 points while shooting nearly 42% from 3, plus pulling down and 10.2 rebounds a game. The more consistent outside shot opened up his offensive game, he was always strong and could get to the rim, but now teams can&#8217;t play off him. Plus, his playmaking improved dramatically.
Those are the kind of numbers that get a player a max contract. Randle is under contract next season for $19.8 million, well under market value (and, amazingly, only $4 million of that money is guaranteed, not that the Knicks are going to let him walk.
The <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/report-knicks-randle-to-talk-extension-in-offseason-but-he-may-wait-for-free-agency" target="_blank">Knicks want to talk contract extension with Randle</a> this offseason. According to the numbers from <a href="https://twitter.com/DanFeldmanNBA" target="_blank">NBC&#8217;s Dan Feldman</a>, the most the Knicks can offer is four years, $119 million, plus they would fully guarantee his salary for next season. It would work out to a little less than $140 million over five years. If Randle plays out next season on his current contract, becomes a free agent in the summer of 2022, then re-sign with the Knicks he can earn a max estimated to be five years, $201 million. That&#8217;s more money and more years, but does Randle want to take the risk of waiting that year, or does he take the extension just to lock in money now?
That&#8217;s for Randle to decide. What he seems to have already decided is he wants to stay in New York.

The only question now is how much it will cost for the Knicks to keep him?

The NBA regular season is down to its final three days, and with that this is our final Three Things to Know of the season — everything you might have missed in the Association, every key moment from the night before in one place.
<h3>1) Heat, Hawks, Knicks all win, keeping East tight</h3>
The battle for 4/5/6 in the East looks will not be decided until Sunday, the final day of the regular season.
Atlanta, Miami, and New York all remain in a virtual tie for the 4/5/6 seeds in the East after all three won on Thursday. All three teams are tied in the loss column at 31.
Atlanta remains the No. 4 seed on Friday morning, half a game ahead of the other two, because it has played one more game (and with that has one more win). The Hawks had little trouble knocking off the reeling Magic on Thursday night, 116-93, and that puts them in the driver&#8217;s seat for the No. 4 seed as long as they can beat the tanking Houston Rockets on Sunday. Atlanta will win the Southeast Division, and if there is a three-way tie between the Hawks/Heat/Knicks then being the division winner becomes the first tiebreaker and Atlanta gets the four seed.
Yes, the NBA still has divisions and winning them can still matter. Why the league has them and why they matter for anything ever is the better question. The NBA does love trying to pretend it&#8217;s the MLB sometimes and cling to tradition for the sake of tradition.

The Heat put on the Miami Vice uniforms one last time — they are reportedly retiring that look — <a href="https://www.flyingeze.com/news/heat-jump-out-early-cruise-past-76ers-106-94-to-hold-on-to-no-5-seed" target="_blank">and got a big win over Philadelphia, 105-94</a>, in a game that wasn&#8217;t that close. Miami has been red hot of late with <a class="nameLink" href="https://www.nbcsports.com/edge/basketball/nba/player/29711/jimmy-butler" target="_blank" target="_blank">Jimmy Butler</a> and <a class="nameLink" href="https://www.nbcsports.com/edge/basketball/nba/player/30440/bam-adebayo" target="_blank" target="_blank">Bam Adebayo</a> looking more like the bubble versions of themselves, and the Heat sent a message to the Sixers in what could be a second-round playoff preview. Miami has the tiebreaker over the Knicks, so they remain the No. 5 seed for now. However, Miami closes with a road back-to-back of Milwaukee and Detroit and may need to win both to keep a top-five spot.
Philadelphia still appears to be a lock for the No. 1 seed despite the loss. The 76ers have a one-game lead over the Nets for the top spot, but because Philly also has the tiebreaker, it&#8217;s essentially a two-game lead with two to play. Philadelphia&#8217;s magic number for the top seed is one, and it closes the season with two games against reeling Orlando.
New York held on to beat a feisty Spurs team 102-98 Thursday, but if the Knicks are going to climb out of the No. 6 spot — and a likely meeting with Milwaukee in the first round — they are going to need some help. First, the Knicks would need to close out the season with wins in a back-to-back against the Hornets and Celtics — not easy, Charlotte still has something to play for, while Boston does not (keep reading to item three on this list). Then, Boston needs to hope Miami stumbles in one of its final games. New York does have the tiebreaker over Atlanta in a two-way tie between the teams, so if the Knicks win out and the Heat stumble, the Knicks can jump up to the four seed. However, New York does not control its own destiny.
From the other half of that Knicks win: Because Sacramento lost on Thursday, San Antonio is officially locked in as the No. 10 seed in the West and will be on the road to start the play-in tournament next week.
The middle of the East is going to come down to games on Sunday.
<h3>2) <a class="nameLink" href="https://www.nbcsports.com/edge/basketball/nba/player/30169/devin-booker" target="_blank" target="_blank">Devin Booker</a> free throws keep Lakers&#8217; dreams alive</h3>
<a class="nameLink" href="https://www.nbcsports.com/edge/basketball/nba/player/30202/norman-powell" target="_blank" target="_blank">Norman Powell</a> got caught reaching with the game on the line Thursday, and Devin Booker&#8217;s subsequent free throws got Phoenix a win over Portland that changed the course of the West playoffs.

The Trail Blazers&#8217; magic number to keep a top-six seed and avoid the play-in games is one, but the loss to the Suns keeps the Lakers&#8217; dreams of climbing out of the play-in alive. Portland controls its own fate: Beat Denver on Sunday and it goes straight to the playoffs, no stopping at &#8220;go&#8221; in the play-in. However, if the Nuggets top the Blazers and the Lakers can win out against a soft schedule — Pacers and Pelicans, with <a class="nameLink" href="https://www.nbcsports.com/edge/basketball/nba/player/28859/lebron-james" target="_blank" target="_blank">LeBron James</a> expected to return — then the Lakers get the No. 6 seed. Portland still has work to do.
With the win, Phoenix stays just one game back of Utah for the best record in the NBA — and the Suns have the tiebreaker. Still, the Suns need help.
The Suns close the season with a back-to-back against the Spurs, while the Jazz face Oklahoma City and Sacramento. If Utah wins out, it gets the No. 1 seed. If Utah stumbles and Phoenix wins out, then the Suns jump to No. 1 — which matters a lot if the Lakers end up the seven seed (as is the most likely outcome). In what is the most likely playoff scenario in the West, Utah as the top seed would have both Los Angeles teams on the other side of the bracket.
<h3>3) The play-in tournament is officially coming to Boston</h3>
They are not going to hang a banner for this in the Garden, but a little bit of history is coming to Boston.
Because Charlotte and Indiana both lost on Thursday, Boston is locked in as the No. 7 seed in the East. The Celtics will host the first play-in game in the East (outside the bubble) next Tuesday against either the Pacers or Hornets — those teams are tied heading into the final days of the season, but Charlotte has the tiebreaker. Washington is looming one game back as the No. 10 seed, but it would need a lot of help to climb out of that spot.
This is not exactly the season Boston was dreaming of, and it will head into that game without <a class="nameLink" href="https://www.nbcsports.com/edge/basketball/nba/player/30298/jaylen-brown" target="_blank" target="_blank">Jaylen Brown</a>, who had wrist surgery on Thursday.
