Man Utd Player Ratings: Kobbie Mainoo Shines, Bruno Fernandes Scores Hat-Trick, but Luke Shaw’s Mistake Costs a Goal

MANCHESTER UNITED overcame an early scare to brush aside Premier League new boys Ipswich Town 5-2 in a rampant second half.

The Tractor Boys were ahead through Leif Diop’s sweet volley amid atrocious defending from Michael Carrick’s side, sending shivers down the home crowd who lost at Hull City on the opening weekend.

But Bruno Fernandes’ third United hat-trick and an own goal from Jacob Greaves from ‘s deflected shot following an accidental own goal, avoided another blunder result.

Greaves endured a hellish afternoon at Old Trafford as he narrowly avoided a second own goal after ‘s lob crossed the line as United dodged a first defeat to Ipswich since 1997.

Here’s how SunSport’s Katherine Walsh rated the United players during their first home game of the season.

Senne Lammens – 6

The Belgian had another good game. Three big first half saves kept United in it, with his backline leaving him vulnerable. Enjoyed a quiet second half, only being called off his line for a corner routine.

Diogo Dalot – 6

A step up from ‘s showing in the Hull debacle, but far from perfect, with yet another opponent using the width of the pitch to punish United’s full backs.

Two mistakes at both inside a few minutes saw Dalot fluff a cross, before misreading ‘s run in behind, leaving Lammens’ goal gaping. A brilliant Kjell Scherpen save denied the Portuguese an opener inside 10 minutes.

Lisandro Martinez – 5

Had to start after 19-year-old ‘s showing against , but the World Cup finalist looked out of rhythm.

Caught out by Enciso and lost possession for Ipswich’s late consolation and needs to get up to speed quickly.

Harry Maguire – 6

The 33-year-old was part of the mess at the back for the second successive weekend, but unlike last Saturday his distribution left a lot to be desired.

That being said United’s second goal summed up Maguire, his deflected finish off Greaves counted despite his handball in the lead up. His 18th goal for the club put United ahead.

Luke Shaw – 5

His nightmare for Ipswich’s opener has only highlighted the will-they won’t-they debate around signing a left back for Tuesday’s 11pm deadline.

The 31-year-old needs competition this season and on this evidence, struggling to contain former Leicester winger Abdul Fatawu, United need to sign a proven left back in the next 48 hours.

Kobbie Mainoo – 8

The 20-year-old was United best player. He seemingly played with a point to prove to for his lack of World Cup minutes.

Mainoo was sharp, fast and as composed as ever, drawing countless fouls throughout. The visitors could not get a grip on the United academy graduate and he set up Cunha’s penalty. Slowed down to bait the press and dictated play.

Youri Tielemans – 6

The former Villa man needs to cover more ground for a pivot with Mainoo to work – but that isn’t the 29-year-old’s game.

Tielemans is a great player but his lack of pace was glaring again. Did show more show physicality in the box when Ipswich were ahead amid some sloppy mistakes.

Bruno Fernandes – 8

Ever eternal. A hat-trick of goals for the PFA player of the year. The United skipper levelled with an excellent touch and finish before the break, his cool spot-kick made it 3-1 and kept himself onside to slot in a fourth.

Added an assist a great home opener, when he picked out Mbeumo’s run beyond Ipswich’s back-line.

Marcus Rashford – 7

A real handle down the left and an obvious step up from on his first Prem start for United since December 1 2024. The England star is staying at Old Trafford this season, it is all but confirmed.

He linked up well with Matheus Cunha and had the fair share of United’s opportunities before the break and worked hard to keep several chances alive in the second half. A fit and firing Rashford is nothing but a good thing for United.

Bryan Mbeumo – 6

His early momentum stalled when he was caught sleeping to Enciso’s 20 yard run, cashed back back but did not cover himself in glory.

Should have levelled when his goal-line knock blasted off the bar. Worked hard but was outshone by his fellow forwards. Lobbed the keeper to score the fifth.

Matheus Cunha – 7

Back as United’s official striker through the middle, Cunha took a while to settle before a terrific assist with a through ball to Fernandes saw the hosts equalise.

The Brazilian often has the cutting edge needed from Old Trafford players and won the penalty when Greaves cut him down before the hour mark.
