MORE than 20,000 flights are being cancelled this summer by a major European airline due to the ongoing fuel crisis.

confirmed that the thousands of flights would be scrapped throughout summer, up until October.

The airline – one of the biggest in Europe only behind – confirmed that the cancellations were to save on the cost of jet fuel.

The cost of fuel has doubled in recent weeks due to the ongoing closure of the , one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

Most of the cancellations affect short haul routes, including flights with it’s now-closed CityLine airline.

Hubs across Frankfurt and Munich, as well as Brussels, , Zurich and Vienna will be hit.

The routes were cited as being “unprofitable short-haul flights”, with 120 cancellations already confirmed yesterday.

More reductions will be confirmed by next month, affecting the rest of summer.

Lufthansa said by ending some of the routes, it would save more than 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel.
