Who is Gian van Veen

He was born on April 23, 2002, in Poederoijen, a small village in Gelderland, Netherlands.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in aviation and previously worked full-time for an air-cargo company.

He is known by the nickname “The Giant” for his six-foot-four stature and rapid ascent through the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) ranks.

In 2023, he secured a two-year PDC Tour Card by finishing ninth on the European Q-School Order of Merit.

During that same year, he topped the 2023 PDC Development Tour Order of Merit.

He has overcome challenges, including a bout of dartitis – a condition caused by psychological factors – early in his career to become a serious competitor.

On Huw Ware’s Tops and Tales podcast, Van Veen shared: “I still remember one game on the Challenge Tour when I first experienced dartitis, and my opponent was frustrated with me because he thought I was doing it intentionally.

“I was in tears, crying my eyes out in the middle of Barnsley Metrodome because I was struggling so much.

“And for my opponent to accuse me of cheating or something — it was devastating.”

Van Veen achieved his first PDC Major by winning on October 26, 2025, defeating his opponent 11-10 in a thrilling final in Dortmund, Germany.

He also recorded significant victories over Ryan Joyce and Michael van Gerwen on his path to the title, despite facing challenges.

This victory made him the first player in 2025 to win a ranked major outside of Humphries and Littler.

Van Veen even survived a match dart from Humphries in the final leg before executing a 100 checkout to secure the win.
