According to Atoyebi, “this is a sponsored smear campaign against a resourceful and intellectually capable man who is steering Nigeria out of financial difficulties.”
She questioned why the group would target “the most dynamic and productive sector,” emphasizing that the FIRS under Adedeji had rejuvenated public revenue generation and minimized reliance on borrowing.
Atoyebi highlighted numerous accomplishments attributed to the FIRS chairman, including reforms that closed revenue loopholes and enhanced the country’s progressive tax system.
She further argued that any attack on the chairman was effectively “an attack on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” considering the crucial role of revenue mobilization in the government's economic strategy.
The statement also credited Adedeji with exceeding revenue targets and enhancing staff welfare, which she claimed had improved morale within the service.
Calling for an investigation into the motives of the Arewa group, Atoyebi urged security agencies to “swiftly investigate those behind it as they qualify as enemies of the state.”
She concluded that Adedeji should be allowed to concentrate on completing his reforms without distractions, adding that “those wishing to take over the service from him should wait for him to fulfill his term.”
