DARTS fans are fearing the worse after the Alexandra Palace wasp looked to have been given the boot, or rather the flick, by Ted Evetts.

had to duck and weave out of the way on the opening day as the wasp buzzed around.

It then had a by in one of the first major eliminations of the tournament.

However, as played his first game of the World Darts Championship against Evetts, the wasp appeared to finally feel the sting.

The World No2 and 2024 world champion scored a 3-1 win over Evetts to set up a round two clash against 71-year-old Paul Lim.

But while losing to Cool Hand, former youth champion Evetts appeared to deal the coupe de grace to the Ally Pally wasp.

Having seen the critter land on his shirt close to his collar, he moved his hand up before flicking it off with his middle finger and then waving goodbye.

The 28-year-old had a little chuckle to himself before shaking hands with Humphries.

However, the video of the incident went viral and left fans devastated at the loss of an Ally Pally legend.

One said: “No way to treat a legend of the game. He’s arguably done more for the sport than Ted Evetts.”

A second said: “The legend of the Ally Pally stage has well and truly gone, thank you Ted!”

A third added: “Wins £15k. Kills a wasp. Lad.”

The Ally Pally wasp has become something of a festive tradition with its appearances in the to pester the world’s best darts stars.

Well, Alexandra Palace, which opened in 1875, is a Grade II listed building which means it is difficult to get planning permission.

It is a big venue and there are lots of nooks and crannies where a queen wasp can infiltrate and then build a nest for the winter.

Others have a different theory. Alexandra Palace is set within 196 acres of parkland, which supports a wide range of wildlife, including insects, plants, birds and trees, and will always look for someone warm and dry.

Once the doors are opened and the stage rigging takes place, they can fly straight in, attracted by the light and heat.

Whenever the 3,300-strong crowds arrive for day one of the World Championship – and the capacity will increase to 5,000 next year – the wasps come out of hibernation and are attracted by the warmth.

Bosses at the building say they always adopt non-intrusive measures in line with the site’s environmental responsibilities.

Though at some point, especially if someone is really stung, they may have to call in the pest controllers to get it resolved.

The problem also happens during the Masters , which is staged in January in the same room.
