EU leaders are advancing with a Rwanda-style migrant agreement, just months after Labour abandoned Britain's plan.

Brussels has approved proposals allowing member states to establish their own deportation agreements with non-EU countries to remove unsuccessful asylum seekers.

Countries will have the ability to transport migrants to “return hubs” without any direct connection to the individuals.

The new policy, known as the Return Regulation, mandates that every EU country acknowledge each other's deportation orders to expedite expulsions across the union.

This regulation must be ratified by the European Parliament before it can take effect.

Officials indicate that the initiative aims to strengthen border controls as public demand rises and new political groups advocate for a firmer stance on illegal immigration.

Brussels acknowledges that only 20 percent of deportation orders are currently enforced and seeks harsher penalties for those who refuse to comply.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir Starmer is advancing his own plan as he seeks to reduce Channel crossings.

However, his proposal would only send migrants abroad for their claims to be evaluated, not for permanent removal.

The Shadow Home Secretary stated: “Even the EU is now considering returning illegal immigrants to safe third countries.

“It is disgraceful that Labour canceled the Rwanda plan just days before flights were set to commence.

“Due to this decision by Keir Starmer, the UK now lacks any deterrent, and as a result, illegal immigration has surged.”
