But he has already revealed that he will not be finishing his career at the Etihad.

Fernandez, 25, is intent on returning to before he hangs up his boots.

And the strength of his comments suggests that fans of the Buenos Aires giants can take him for his word.

The ex-Chelsea midfielder learned his trade in River’s academy, making 51 first-team appearances and scoring 12 goals before leaving for in 2022.

Fernandez told Los Edul : “I want to return to River at some point.

“I’ve said it several times. I’m going to return, I’m sure. It’s something I really want.

“I stand by my words and what’s on record. If I say it, it’s because I feel it and know I need to return to win things and enjoy the River Plate world for many more years than I did.

“Today, I’m here with a long contract at Man City. There’s still a long way to go, but it will happen.”

Fernandez penned a bumper five-year deal at City, tying him to the club until the summer of 2031.
