The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has recognized the recent classification of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the President of the United States as a clear and pressing reality that requires an urgent and thorough reevaluation of Nigeria’s security framework.

NYCN National President, Isah Abubakar, stated on Sunday in Kaduna, “This designation is not just a diplomatic observation; it serves as a serious indictment of the current security leadership's inability to effectively address the growing threats of insurgency, banditry, and national instability.

“The era of complacency has ended. The safety of Nigerian citizens must be the top priority, surpassing all political considerations.”

As a result, the NYCN has made urgent requests to President Tinubu to promptly relieve both current Ministers of Defence of their positions and replace them with experienced individuals who possess in-depth knowledge of security operations.

Abubakar remarked, “The tenure of the current ministers has been characterized by significant failures in oversight and strategic direction in protecting the nation.”

He emphasized, “The National Security Adviser should be replaced with a more capable, experienced, and proven individual. We strongly recommend that this replacement come from a pool of retired, highly decorated military generals who have a comprehensive understanding of the country’s security landscape and are capable of providing the necessary strategic vision and execution skills.”

He believes it is clear that the lack of collaboration and effective coordination between the current Ministers of Defence and the Office of the National Security Adviser has severely hindered the national counter-insurgency efforts, highlighting that the current trio of appointees lacks the coordinated command needed to address this critical situation.

Regarding the Inspector General of Police (IGP), he stated that the IGP should not be excluded from the necessary reforms, insisting that he should also retire immediately. This move is essential for the Presidency to implement a complete and holistic restructuring of the entire security command chain, from military strategy to internal law enforcement.

“The NYCN asserts that this comprehensive reform of the security leadership is the vital first step toward restoring public confidence and achieving real peace and stability across Nigeria, especially in the Northern region, which has suffered the most from insecurity.

“We are prepared to support any genuine efforts to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians,” Abubakar concluded.

What is the NYCN's stance on Nigeria being designated a “Country of Particular Concern”?

The NYCN views this designation as a serious indication of the failures in Nigeria's security leadership and calls for an urgent reassessment of the country's security architecture.

What demands has the NYCN made to President Tinubu?

The NYCN has urged President Tinubu to relieve the current Ministers of Defence and replace them with experienced personnel, as well as to restructure the security command chain for better effectiveness.

What does the NYCN suggest regarding the National Security Adviser?

The NYCN suggests that the National Security Adviser should be replaced with a more competent individual, preferably a retired military general with a strong understanding of Nigeria's security issues.
