The UK Security Agency (UKHSA) have advised the public against using four brands of wet wipes that have tested positive for a deadly bacteria.
Six deaths have been linked to the wet wipes in the UK.
These people died within 30 days of their infection, and one death was attributed to it.
The bacteria in question is Burkholderia stabilis – thought to cause infections in vulnerable people.
It is thought to be particularly dangerous to those with a weakened immune system, cystic fibrosis or .
In response to the growing issue, the UKHSA have said: “There have been 59 confirmed cases in an outbreak of Burkholderia stabilis identified in the United Kingdom from 2018 and up to 3 February 2026, associated with several non-sterile alcohol-free wipe products.
“These have included some serious infections in addition to the attributable death.
“These products, which may have been used for ‘skin cleansing’ and cleaning in or around wounds have been withdrawn from sale, but may still be found in some first aid kits and in people’s homes.”
They also advised people to check for these wipes in their home, including in any first aid kits they may own.
The UKHSA said: “Those who still have any of the affected products should stop using them immediately and dispose of them in standard household waste.”
Some of the symptoms of an infection include redness, swelling, drainage from a wound, or in the most extreme of cases bloodstream infection.
The risk has been categorised as ongoing, however cannot be transferred from person-to-person.
