BRITAIN must “stand up for our values” and implement a ban on the burqa, the Shadow Justice Secretary asserted today.

He broke ranks as the first shadow cabinet minister to endorse a burqa ban, resonating with calls from Tory backbenchers and Reform MPs.

The senior Tory emphasized that prohibiting face coverings would assist in shaping “the kind of society we want to pass on to our children and grandchildren.”

Mr. Jenrick stated on Talk: “I would likely support a ban on the burqa.

“There are fundamental values in this country, and we should stand up for and defend them.

“When we see these values eroding or being entirely undermined – whether it’s sharia law or the wearing of the burqa – these are issues we must confront if we aspire to build the kind of society we want to pass on to our children and grandchildren.”

Jenrick’s comments come as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party advocates for a ban on burqas and niqabs in all public spaces, including cafes, shops, and schools.

The Brothers of Italy party plans to introduce a Bill aimed at combating “Islamic separatism.”

Sara Kelany, head of the Brothers of Italy, remarked: “This bill will primarily address the regulation of mosque funding and the prohibition of full-face veils.

“It also emphasizes the legislation against forced marriages.

“In Italy, we uphold our laws which are founded on a specific set of values.”

Several European countries have already enacted bans on the burqa and other full-face coverings, often citing security and integration concerns.

France led the way as the first in Europe, passing a law in April 2011 that made it illegal to wear face-covering veils in public.

Belgium soon followed, enforcing a similar ban by July 2011.

Austria adopted a public veil ban in October 2017, while Denmark enacted its own in 2018, making face-covering garments illegal in public.

Most recently, Switzerland voted for a ban on full facial coverings, including burqas, in a 2021 referendum.

Last night, the Shadow Home Secretary declared: “If Italy is taking this step, why aren’t we?

“We need to implement a burqa ban now.”
