EFL hero Billy Sharp revealed he wants to play for one more year despite reaching the advanced age of 40.

Sharp’s professional career kicked off in 2004 with his beloved who called him up to the first team after years within the academy.

The striker counts a total of 295 senior goals – six of which were in the – throughout a nomadic stint in football that also saw him playing for the likes of , Nottingham Forest, LA Galaxy and more.

The Sheffield native helped current club win promotion to League One last season after returning to the club for a third spell.

But Rovers confirmed the centre-forward will be leaving in June when his contract runs out.

Nevertheless, the forward insists he has more left in the tank for one more campaign.

Sharp told BBC Radio Sheffield : “I can play on another year but I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do.

“I’m open to opportunities whether that’s at another club playing or what. I’m gonna see.

“I’ve only ever been a free agent once and I ended up going to LA Galaxy.

“I’m quite looking forward to sitting on my sofa again having a shandy and a few nuts and my missus saying, ‘You better sign for someone’.

“I’m going to see what opportunities I can get and it’s exciting. I love football and I love scoring goals. I’m going to leave it wide open.”

Sharp revealed he was inspired by former international Phil Jagielka, who also played until he was 40 years old.

The EFL star has also been influenced by former Sheffield United team-mate , who is still shining bright for Barnsley at the age of 38.

added: “Players like Phil Jagielka kept me going and I kept him going and the people keeping me going now are people like David McGoldrick.

“He’s been flying and Barnsley are missing him lately. I had a good chat with him yesterday and we’re going to try and meet up soon and get a team together. I want to play with him again.”
