The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has praised the Federal Government for its prompt response following a coup attempt in the Benin Republic, while urging President Bola Tinubu’s administration to exhibit the same urgency in addressing insecurity within Nigeria.

In a statement shared on his verified X account on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, noted that Nigeria’s rapid reaction in Benin “stands in stark contrast” to the government’s management of ongoing banditry, terrorism, and violent crime throughout the nation.

“We commend the Federal Government for acting swiftly to uphold constitutional order in our neighboring country,” Abdullahi stated.

“However, the government must now take the necessary actions to align this intervention with the legal stipulations of our Constitution.”

He added that while the President’s actions are necessary, they must still receive ratification from the National Assembly as mandated by law for security deployments outside of the country.

The party raised concerns regarding what it termed inconsistencies in Nigeria’s foreign policy decisions, particularly highlighting the rapid intervention in Benin compared to the slower reaction during the crisis in Guinea-Bissau.

“Why were we not as prompt in responding to the crisis in Guinea-Bissau, even when a former Nigerian President was in danger there?” the statement questioned. “What has changed? What criteria determine when Nigeria acts decisively and when it hesitates?”

The ADC also expressed alarm over what it referred to as a “growing democratic reversal” in the region, cautioning that effective governance remains the most robust defense against coups.

“If Nigeria can respond decisively to threats beyond our borders, why has our government shown such alarming incompetence in managing domestic insecurity?” Abdullahi inquired. “A government capable of swift action abroad must also take decisive measures at home.”

He emphasized that the preservation of democracy must begin with ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerians.

“The best protection against military interventions is for elected governments to make democracy meaningful for the people by enhancing their quality of life and allowing opposition to flourish,” he concluded.
